Question about Craftsman Garden

2 Answers

Craftsman edger I recently got a craftsman edger from a yard sale and the guy said he couldn't get it to start and that he thinks its the carb that needs to be cleaned or replaced. The model number is 358.797550. It has 2 screws on top, one is L and the other is H. Both screws are tightened as far as they can go and I am assuming that they are for the fuel and air mixture, bot not sure which is which. After much adjusting of these two screws and multiple times trying to start it still no luck. At full choke, sometimes it would start but not stay on for more than a few seconds and half choke would just do the same sometimes. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Check the fuek lines for hole and leaks, check the fuel filter and clean if necessary. remove the carbuerator and inspect the gasket; it should be soft and flexible, if it seems hard or brittle replace it. clean the carb with carb cleaner sray (available at any local auto parts store) and compressed air. make sure you get inside the small fuel rail holes. once you get it running hold around mid throttle and slowly adjust the 2 screws until the rpms sound steady. if that doesn't work have the carb repaired at a service center or replaced.

Hello navytech79, I ran on to your question while looking for parts to the identical edger which I also acquired recently at a garage sale. I had to tear it down as very dirty with sand and oil, including the carb. I finally got it running today and found out that the L screw is the low speed or idle adjustment, and the H is fuel adjustment for the high speed. I also had a hard time starting as compression is low and required a very hard fast pull on the starter rope.
According to the instructions on the air cleaner door, it says to use full choke until it fires, then go to half choke and when starting, let it warm up for a few seconds prior to moving choke to off. I was able to adjust the carb and on high speed I had to open up the screw needle to approximately two turns from full seating. I takes lots of patience, and good luck. Harv2

Check out the tubing to the carb. If it is good then the top part of the carb with the check valves is defective. If so, you need a new carb since those suckers cannot be fixed.

Need to know how to rebuild the carb on a 3.0 hp

The carb sounds like a vacu-jet, very easy to rebuild. Remove it from the tank but be careful not to damage the siphon tube. Then make sure to check for foreign matter in the tank (big problem with this system), clean and flush it. The idle screw is easy, the other is set by going from idle to full throttle quickly and adjusting it just so it doesn't stumble

Craftsman yard tractor runs but take foot off brake it dies.....

Check the under seat switch. The switch sometimes fails and this cuts the ignition except when the foot brake is down. You can use jumpers across the switch wires to test it.
