I have a few Garmin 3600s with fried firmware but perfect screens. I've replaced batteries in quite a few of these units, and screen replacement is also definitely do-able by an amateur. I would be happy to sell anyone a Garmin 3600 for $25, including shipping.
I have a 3600 that worked perfectly until i hit the "UPDATER" icon at Garmins suggestion, it fried something but the screen and the rest of the unit are in great shape........ I could not shut the unit off so I took the batter out, the screen is fine, if anyone want it for 40 bucks, drop me a line......... Sammmyg96@aol.com

When you opened up the unit, you probably loosened one of the wires. Look to see if there is a small, short black wire and a small short red wire attached to the screen and soldered onto the circut board. They control the back light and one of them may be loose or disconnected. It can be repaired if you have a fine enough soldering tool.
Try this. Go to the Garmin web site and click on support at the top of the page. When the support page comes up there will be a menu selection for download manuals. Click on that selection and you will be presented with a selection screen to enter your particular device information. You will then be able to download the most current manual for your device.
Even with the maps unlocked it they can appear to be locked.
There are little known flags to diable/enable the base/detailed maps.
Check that the boxes are checked under the <Map><Options><Misc>
You can select either base or detailed maps there.
Disable both and it looks like the unit doesn't have any maps.
