It sounds like the usb port on the drive itself is shot. You can actually take apart the case and pull just the harddrive out and use a hotswap usb harddrive reader and get to your files again

Trying to find the operators manual for prestige desktop hard drive super speed usb 3.0 ,2 tb

The general directions is to plug the USB cable from the IOmega Prestige into any available (Open) USB port.

To open, (Access) the contents on the harddrive, double-click on the drive letter that corresponds with the IOmega.

In WinXP left-click on Start, then on My Computer.
In Win Vista and Win7 left-click on the Windows logo button, then on Computer.

You will see there are different drive letters;

Drive A: is reserved for a Floppy Drive. Older computers
Drive C: is for the Harddrive. (Hard Disk)
Drive D: is reserved for a recovery drive, or an optical drive (CD/DVD drive)
Drive E: is reserved for an optical drive, usually.

Drive letters beyond these are usually under the heading, Devices with Removable Storage

One of these drive letters should correspond with the IOmega.

Suggest, IOmega not plugged in, go to My Computer, or Computer, and look at the devices connected to the various drive letters.

Now plug the IOmega in, and see if it shows up next to a drive letter.
(Give the computer BIOS a few seconds)

Where there was NO device shown BEFORE, there should now be a device shown.
{No device shown before, but now there is. May not state IOmega, just external storage, or similar}

DOUBLE-click on the device shown.

For example:

I have drive letters C: D: E: F: G: H: I: J: and K:

Drive letter C: is for my harddrive.
Drive letter D: is for a recovery drive. (Partition in harddrive reserved for recovery)
Drive letter E: is for an optical drive (CD/DVD drive)

Drive letters F through K are reserved for an external storage device.
Whether it be an external harddrive, or flashdrive, or what have you.

IF you find the drive letter that corresponds with the IOmega DOUBLE-click right on it.
If nothing happens, or if there is no device shown when the IOmega is plugged in, there is a problem with the IOmega.

Hard to believe IOmega is still having problems with their external harddrives.

In the past they were having problems with a small circuit board located inside the IOmega's case.

[ A circuit board is a PCB.
Printed Circuit Board

For example a computer mouse has a small PCB in it,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mouse_printed_circuit_board_both_sides_IMG_0959a.JPG ]

The small circuit board is an Interface Board.

It connects the harddrive inside the IOmega's plastic case, to a USB cable, and this allows the harddrive inside to be plugged into a USB port on a computer.

As mentioned inside the plastic outer case (External enclosure) of the IOmega is a harddrive.
(Hard Disk drive; proper speak)

Harddrives are measure across their Width. There are two current types used;
A laptop size harddrive, and a desktop size harddrive.

A Laptop size harddrive is 2.5 inches across in width. (2 and a half inches, or 6.4cm)
A Desktop size harddrive is 3.5 inches across in width. (Or 8.9cm)

There are two technologies used;
IDE (PATA) or SATA

I'm sure the harddrive inside susanbrenton is a SATA unit.
I BELIEVE, it is a laptop size harddrive (2.5)

Point?

If there is data (Information) on the IOmega that you must have, you may wish to buy an inexpensive external enclosure, remove the harddrive from the IOmega, and install it into the external enclosure.

The external enclosure has a plastic case (Enclosure), and a small circuit board inside. It has a USB cable, or connector, just like the IOmega does.

Once you install the IOmega harddrive inside the case, the case is closed, and it's USB cable is plugged into a computer.
(Just like the IOmega. You are just replacing the small circuit board essentially)

Once you have the IOmega's case open, and can view the internal harddrive, measure the width of the harddrive.
Buy the appropriate external enclosure.

This is one example of an external enclosure for a 2.5 SATA harddrive,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2783

This is one example of a external enclosure for a 3.5 SATA harddrive,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2145406&CatId=2780

Basic instructions on how to open an IOmega Prestige external enclosure (Case):

1) There are two Philips head screws on the Back of the case.
These are removed.
Once removed a the oblong panel on the end comes off.

2) You can now see the harddrive inside. Pull from the Front, and remove the harddrive out of the case.

3) The harddrive is attached with screws to a metal carrier. (Bracket, essentially)
Remove the screws, remove the harddrive.

Basic example, the harddrive will look like this,

try adding the harddrive to another system as a slave and check the integrity of the drive with chkdisk. if it is not showing up, then there is an internal problem with the harddrive and must be replaced.

Hi, I have a Toshiba 80GB MK8037GSX 2.5" SATA in

1) have checked bios cannot see hdd mounted.

That is BAD -- the disk-drive could have "died".

2) tried a seagate hdd works fine so connections in laptop seem to be working

That shows that your motherboard is GOOD, but that your disk-drive is BAD.

3) can hear hardrive trying to do something as can hear harddrive usual noise, continous noise for about 5 sec before getting the error message

That is BAD -- the disk-drive is "dying".

4) no rattling or crackling noise from drive apart from the above

That is BAD -- none of the files can be read from your disk.

i have created a ubuntu boot up disk which allows me to access laptop but does shows error when locating hdd,

That is BAD.

once in ubuntu i can access internet but it does not show the windows partition of the harddrive, only shows ubuntu as opearing system, confused.

That is BAD. Only the CD/DVD disk has been mounted -- Ubuntu could not mount the disk-drive.

In regards to ubuntu working does this mean the hdd is ok?

No, it means that your motherboard is working.

and is there anyhting i can try via ubuntu to locate the files?

No. The disk-drive is "dead".

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

You need a 2.5" inch SATA to USB external harddrive enclosure.

since its a laptop hard drive you need a small case.

I have an IOMEGA 60 GB HDD probably from 2003. Power supply input is 5V / 1A. I mistakenly plugged in 16V / 4.5A from IBM PC power Adapter. Any suggestions how I can extract data or which parts to...

Just take the drive out and put it into a new enclosure would be your cheapest option to keep it portable

I label all my PSU's with a dymo label maker to try avoid the situation you just had (fingers crossed)

Or you could insert the drive into a computer that has a suitable interface eg. SATA or IDE

Having a similar problem with the La Cie 500gb. Powerbook G4.

The problem that has been inherent with all LaCie external harddrives, is the interface in the case itself.

Interface:
All external harddrives have a Style of harddrive that is used in a laptop, or one that is used in a desktop computer.
Laptop harddrives are 2-1/2 inches across in width.
Desktops are 3-1/2 inches across.
Your LaCie will have a 3.5, (3-1/2) inch desktop style harddrive, inside the case.

There are two main Types of harddrives.
IDE and SATA. (There is also a newcomer. SSD. SSD isn't being used in LaCie external harddrives at the moment, to my knowledge)

Your LaCie will use a SATA harddrive inside it.
This is an example of an average SATA harddrive,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hdd.jpg
The photo of this harddrive is tilted at an angle, that doesn't readily show the interface connection, but it helps to explain.

At the bottom of this harddrive in the photo, and to the left, is the interface area.

Viewing the harddrive, look at the four metal pins on the extreme right of the harddrive. To the left of these pins is the Jumper pin area. (Has a white jumper on two of those pins)

To the left of the Jumper area is an opening, and to the left of that, is a long slot. The first small slot area is for the 7-pin Interface cable.
(Data cable) The next slot to the left, is for the 15-pin power cable.

This 7-pin Interface mates up to socket holes in a connector, of the case of the LaCie external harddrive.

It is this interface connector, inside the LaCie external harddrive case, that is the problem.
Solution?
Buy a quality, in-expensive External Enclosure, take the harddrive out of the LaCie, and install it in this enclosure.

Examples of 3.5 Sata External Enclosures,
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2780&name=3.5-eSATA-enclosure&Nav=|c:2778|&Sort=0&Recs=10
(From $15 to $35, is a good range for a decent external enclosure)

Is my LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB fried/dead???

You're not missing any step at all, because with SATA hard drive if its really working your computer should
automatically detect it and since this hard drive suddenly stop working there's a possibility that its already
fried but if you want you can try this hard drive again to a different computer and if still not detected by
second computer its already dead.........
