Question about Toshiba 57H81 57" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Horizontal sync When I first turn the TV on it has no horizontal sync. As it warms up the picture becomes clearer. It never really comes in clear and seems to be getting worse. I can adjust convergence but it does not fix it. The HDTV inputs seem fine, no sync problem. Could this be the tuner board ?

Re: Horizontal sync

Zeutaluras, My guess would be the same as yours because the horizontal osc. is synchronized when you apply the signal to the HD inputs. I am assuming the signal with embedded horizontal sync and composite video passes through the tuner boards as you mentioned. I'll confirm with the schematic once I see it. If it is a separate board can you get one to substitute? I think you may be able to locate the problem with an oscilloscope and schematic if you can access different points in the schematic. I'll try to help once I know more. My problem prevents any type of built in diagnostics since the set doesn't power up.

Horizontal hold picture is rolling

Possible fault in the SYNC section and it can be due a lot of reasons.
1. the loss of feedback from the flyback transformer( EHT) cannot produce the correct sync.
2. Failure of the deflection circuit- failure of the IC.
3. Failure of related components in this section, crystals, capacitors.
4. need to use an oscilloscope to trace the horizontal/vertical pulses to locate the fault-- must have a clear idea of the circuit.

When I first turn on the TV, and until it completely warms up, there are horizontal lines across the screen that roll so you can't see the picture. As it warms up, the lines slowly disapear until the...

You will need to remove the signal board. This is the board with the RCA jacks and RF connectors. On this board there will be many components that are numbered. You will be searching for two capacitors that are bad. These are the locations and values. The first is capacitor location, C2V29, which is 16 volts at 22Mf , replace this. The next will be C2P05 which is 16 volts at 100 Mf, replace as well. And if you do have the board removed, you should, as well, resolder the pins on the convergence ICs. These are ICs are mounted on large heatsinks. Inspect the board for any and all other bad solder grounds. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support.

When I turn the TV on the picture is severely wavy for about 30 minutes getting clearer as the time goes by. When it first started 7 months ago the time period was shorter. Can this be fixed...

Sounds like you have a weakening horizontal capacitor in the power supply. I would certainly visit your local TV tech and have them repair this. It is neccessary to service now before repairs are to expensive. H ave them check all capacitors and resolder any and all bad grounds. The ones in particular include any ICs mounted on heat sinks and your power resistors and horizontal transformers. This should cover most of it. Take this note to them. They will know what you are asking. Thanks for asking!

Need to find horizontal adjustment

You have bad capacitors next to your vertical IC. And be sure to solder the rings around the bottom of the vertical IC. There are no customer controls that will cure this. You need a tv tech!

Horizontal lines on start up

I get the exact same issue, exepct now it never clears up. I have tried to find someone to come look at it but no one does "house calls" anymore and everyone I call makes it sound so easy to just toss this beast in a car and bring it in. One of the repair techs said the issue sounded like the board had been zapped by a lighting surge...but of course there was no way to be sure unless I brought the set in.
