My computer started running slow then started rebooting every 3 min. I conducted all of the restore options including restoring to the applications sent with the computer at the time of purchase. Now Windows XP home edition, Microsoft works, word perfect and McAfee fail to restore and operate.

I would suggest getting more ram, uninstalling unused programs, and ensure you have no viruses or spyware before rebooting the whole thing. I have a Dell c521 and I am trying to restore to factory settings but when I go into the the advanced boot options menu I don't have a repair mode like it is supposed to. It has other options that say to...


Use Dell PC Restore by Symantec only as the last method to restore your operating system. PC Restore restores your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer. Any programs or files added since you received your computer—including data files—are permanently deleted from the hard drive. Data files include documents, spreadsheets, e-mail messages, digital photos, music files, and so on. If possible, back up all data before using PC Restore.
Note: Using PC Restore permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any applications or drivers installed after you received your computer. If possible, back up the data before using PC Restore.
To use PC Restore: 1 Turn on the computer and watch the keyboard status lights.
2 Immediately upon seeing the lights flash, press <Ctrl><F11>.
If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish restarting, and then restart the computer again.
Note: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.
3 On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
4 On the next screen, click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
5 When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.
NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.
6 When prompted, click Yes.
The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the computer was turned on.
7 Click Next.
The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
8 After the computer restarts, click OK.

and run a full scan - this will remove most of the viruses on your computer. Should help speed it up as well.

Once thats done, install AVG Free and run a full scan

Once AVG is done scanning, i'd also install and run SpyBot S&D to remove any other infections that AVG/HouseCall may have missed.

After HouseCall, AVG and SpyBot have ran, you should be all set! If you can't get to any IE pages, and are posting this from a different computer, see below on how to restore your IE settings...

Being that you were able to get to this site to post, i can assumeIf you can't seem to get to the site, which happens w/ some viruses, try restoring your internet back to its original state. There's steps on how to do that below as well.

  1. 1: Open up the internet window, by clicking on the "blue e" on your desktop, or by going to the Start Menu, All programs, internet Explorer
  2. Step 3 blue-e-2_thumb.jpg From the Start Menu If the "blue E" is not in fact on your desktop then refer to the picture in this step.
  3. Step 4 toolsmenu_thumb.jpg Menu Bar 2: Once the internet is open, you will then want to go to the "Tools" Menu, in the internet window. If you are using internet explorer 7 the tools menu is on what is called the Menu bar, and this menu bar generally is in the upper left hand corner.

Once you have selected, advanced at the bottom right there is an option there to RESET, this will restore the default settings, of your internet explorer Browser.

Also, another thing to consider is a system restore, if your computer is so bad that the above isn't working. For XP, system restore works wonders. See below for instructions on how to complete a system restore.

1.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
2.
On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
3.
On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to, as shown in Figure 2, and then click Next.

On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, verify that the correct restore point is chosen, and then close any open programs.
5.
Click Next if you are ready to proceed or click Back to change the restore point.
6.
The computer will shut down automatically and reboot. On reboot, you'll see the Restoration Complete page, and then click OK.
After reviewing the stability of your system, you can choose another restore point or undo this restoration. Just open System Restore and make the appropriate choice. After you use System Restore, you'll have an additional task, Undo my last restoration, on the System Restore Welcome page. Remember that you'll have to reinstall any programs that were installed after the restore point.
If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode. To use System Restore in Safe Mode, press the F8 key during reboot and choose Safe Mode. When your computer starts in either Safe Mode or Normal Mode, System Restore can be used to capture a working previous state. System Restore can't be opened unless the system is bootable into one of these modes.

I need to do a complete reinstallation of the XP operating system on my Dell e310 , where can I purchase a cd to do this ?? I did not get a recovery disk when I purchased this unit .This means reformatting...


Hi there,

if you check in your start menu you may have a recovery option to create the discs, this is what newer computer do this days, or even better you may have a partitioned hard drive with the recovery unit ready to go, if so start the computer holding F12 and it will run you through this.

If not you can purchase them from Dell itself, and this will come with all the drivers ready to install and you will be ready to go with no messing about.

if you purchase a XP disc from a computer store it will cost you a bomb then you will have to download the drivers from the dell website.

My hp 7965 pc desktop (pavillion) starts fine but when loading windows xp, it gets to a piont and restarts the computer completely, over and over again. HELP please!!


Some Software Applications May Cause Windows Stop Responding or Restart During Startup or Boot in Windows XP.

If a PC that has been working properly fails to startup or boot, especially after a new application or driver is installed, it is necessary to perform one or more of the following methods to correct the problem. The PC may lockup, freeze, hang, or automatically restart when the Windows Desktop first displays during startup.
Method 1: Disabling automatic restart
This method disables automatic restart if you are unable to view Windows Desktop and/or the notebook continues rebooting automatically (whether by the user or the notebook continues booting without user intervention).
1. During the rebooting process, repeatedly press the F8 key to enter Windows Advance Options Menu.
2. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Disable automatic restart on system failure and then press the Enter key.
3. Use up and down arrow keys to select the operating system to start (if more than one OS is installed).
4. Press the Enter key. Windows should start.

Method 2: Use last known good configuration
Using the last known good configuration may allow the pc to boot to Windows using the most recent settings that worked.
1. During the rebooting process, repeatedly press the F8 key to enter Windows Advance Options Menu.
2. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) and then press the Enter key.
3. Use up and down arrow keys to select the operating system to start (if more than one OS is installed).
4.Press the Enter key.

Method 3: Use System Restore to reset Windows to an earlier known safe operating point
This method reverses recent operating system changes to the notebook PC, such as the installation of new software, and takes the computer back to a previous working state. This method may uninstall or remove the software that is causing the problem. Check with the software manufacturer for any known problems and reinstall the software if appropriate.
1. Start Windows in the Safe Mode as follows:
- Remove any disks or CDs, and disconnect any external devices or peripherals.
- Press and hold the Power button for 5 seconds to turn off the computer.
- Press the Power button to turn on the computer.
- Press the F8 key repeatedly when the first screen appears.
- From the Windows Advanced Start-up menu, select Safe Mode and press ENTER .
The computer may run slower in the Safe Mode and the desktop will not look as nice due to reduced colors.
2. Click Start , then click Help and Support .
3. On the Help and Support home page, click System Restore .
4. On the System Restore page, select the Restore my computer to an earlier time option and click Next .
5. Navigate through the calendar looking for a highlighted date and select a restore point date and time that is earlier than when you started experiencing the problem, then click Next .
The computer should shut down and turn back on by itself after the restoration completes. When the Restoration Complete window appears, click OK to continue.

Method 4: Uninstall recently installed applications using Add/Remove Programs
1. Start Windows in the Safe Mode as follows:
- Remove any disks or CDs, and disconnect any external devices or peripherals.
- Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds to turn off the computer.
- Press the Power button to turn on the computer.
- Press the F8 key repeatedly when the first screen appears.
- From the Windows Start-up menu, select Safe Mode and press ENTER .
The computer may run slower in Safe Mode and the desktop will not look as nice due to reduced colors.
2. On the Windows taskbar click Start , click Control Panel and then click Add or Remove Programs .
3. Navigate through the alphabetical list of all installed programs and select the name of the most recently installed program or programs.
4. Click Remove , click OK when prompted to verify the removal of the program.
5. Restart the computer by selecting Start , Shutdown , and Restart .
- If the computer starts up properly, contact the software manufacturer for updated instructions for a proper installation.
- If the computer does not start up properly, reboot the computer in the Safe Mode and repeat the methods for uninstalling any other recently installed software.

Method 5: Remove applications that load during startup using the System Configuration Utility
If the system fails to start properly after installing a new software application, there may be conflicts with the application if it loads during startup. To resolve the problem, it may be necessary to use the System Configuration Utility to remove the application from Windows startup, or to change the startup sequence.
1. Start Windows in the Safe Mode as follows:
- Remove any disks or CDs, and disconnect any external devices or peripherals.
- Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds to turn off the computer.
- Press the Power button to turn on the computer.
- Press the F8 key repeatedly when the first screen appears.
- From the Windows Start-up menu, select Safe Mode and click ENTER .
The computer may run slower in Safe Mode and the desktop will not look as nice due to reduced colors.
2. Click Start , click Run , type MSCONFIG , then click OK .
3. On the System Configuration Utility window, on the General tab, select Selective Startup option, and unselect the Load Startup Items .
4. Click OK and then click Restart .
The computer should restart and operate properly even without loading any of the startup items. Most startup items are helpful utilities that run in the background or sit in the system tray until they are needed.
- If the computer does not restart and operate properly, there is a more severe problem and performing the method for reinstalling the Windows OS may be necessary.
- If the computer restarts properly, examine and enable the entries under the startup tab.

System restore stopped working


Hi, Troubleshoot System Restore:

Some common problems that could cause System Restore not to work properly and their solutions include the following:

• There is less than 200 MB of free space available on the computer—free up some space on the hard drive by deleting unused files or images. 
• After rebooting, the restoration is unsuccessful—choose an earlier restore point and try again. 
• Restoration was denied due to non-administrator status—log out and then back in as an administrator. 
• The System Restore Service is not running—Open Administrative Tools, click Computer Management, and then click Services and Applications. Click Services, and double-click System Restore Services from the list. Verify the service is started and running. If not, under Service status, click Start and change the startup type to Automatic.

Can't get Vista to restart


Start windows, befor Ram loads hit F8 / F9 / F11 so u can acces to Boot Menu
then Hit Safe Mode it will loads windows but with restricted opcions then go to Start menu --> execut or Go
and then type CHKDSK and reboot
if it doesnt work ull have to restore your system
ull have to boot on safe mode and do this it will work 100/100

Click the program you want to remove, and then click Change/Remove.
If the system's instability has occurred immediately after a new device driver is installed, use the Device Driver Rollback feature instead of System Restore. To roll back to an earlier driver:

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2.
On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
3.
In the Device Manager dialog box, double-click the hardware that uses the driver in question.
4.
In the device Properties dialog box, on the Driver tab, click Roll Back Driver.

If,after trying these options the computer is still unstable, opt forSystem Restore. You'll want to save this option for last because thechanges made to your computer are more comprehensive than if you simplyuninstall a program or rollback a device driver.
Use System RestoreAfteryou've decided to use System Restore to revert your system to aprevious state, start the System Restore Wizard and follow the prompts.To use the System Restore Wizard, make sure you're logged on as anadministrator, and then follow these steps:

Rebooting windows vista back to when i first got without a disc


You might try system restore option and restore it to a date you know it worked well
1.

Using Dell Factory Image Restore in Windows Vista
1 Turn on the computer.
2 As the computer starts, press <F8> on the keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.

If you press <F8> after the Windows logo appears on the screen, the Advanced Boot Options menu will not appear on the screen. If you do not see the Advanced Boot Options menu, restart the computer, and then repeat this step until you see the menu on the screen.
3 Press the <Down Arrow> on the keyboard to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press <Enter>.
4 Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.
5 Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.
6 Click Dell Factory Image Restore.
7 In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.
8 Click to select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box.
9 Click Next.
The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.
10 When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.
