This is normal as the Harddisk will never give You the full space  mentioned
It reserves  some space for the formatting information.
some times  If ur disk is formatted in NTFS it takes  up more space than FAT formatting.

So this is normal .

Even on My comp i have something like 150Gb  when it states 160GB so i guess urs is normal.

hope this will solve your curiosity

You may want to try to format it from windows management of the discs in NTFS filesystem.
This is because the FAT32 filesystem recognize only a part of the total capacity of your hard disk

Most commonly, 297 GB is the formatted capacity of the 320 GB hard drive. You can check if there is any unpartitioned space left on your hard drive. Right click My Computer, click Manage, click Disk Management, locate the hard drive which shows 297 GB (a big reactangle). If this rectangle is all the way from left to right, everything is fine. Else it will also show another rectangle next to it as Unpartitioned space which you can format and use.

Hard drive help

What tool did you use to clone the drive? During the cloning process, it almost always gives you the option to resize the destiniation partition, but by default, it leaves the destination partition the same as the source. If you go into Disk Management on your computer, do you see the other 270GB as unpartitioned space? If so, you have two options - you can create a new partition and move your data onto it - or you can re-clone your old drive and make sure to expand the destination partition if given the option.

Long periods of hard drive activity

Most likely, it could be the amount of ram you have in your computer. If your running low on ram and it is using the virtual memory your computer can be running all the time causing a slow down in whatever you do. Check to see how much ram you have :)

First, you are talking about storage space not memory. Make sure to make that distinction when posting for help so we know what to help you with.

How much space do you have total? To check the size and free space do this:
  1. Click on the Start button located in the lower left corner of the Taskbar.
  2. In the menu that pops up, click on My Computer to open the window.
  3. Single click on the Local Disk (C:). You will see the size of the hard drive at the bottom of the blue bar on the left of the window.
  4. If you do not see it, then click on Details. you will see how big the hard drive is under Total Size in GB and how much of that space is unused (Free Space)/li>

You may not be able to free up a lot of space - it may be better to upgrade to a bigger hard drive. Most computer stores can also copy your old drive to the new one for you so you dont have to reinstall windows.
