Replacing the ink cartridges B Your machine is equipped with an ink dot counter. The ink dot counter automatically monitors the level of ink in each of the 4 cartridges. When the machine detects an ink cartridge is running out of ink, the machine will tell you with a message on the LCD.The LCD will tell you which ink cartridge is low or needs replacing. Be sure to follow the LCDprompts to replace the ink cartridges in the correct order. Even though the machine tells you that an ink cartridge is empty, there will be a smallamount of ink left in the ink cartridge. It is necessary to keep some ink in the inkcartridge to prevent air from drying out anddamaging the print head assembly. a Open the ink cartridge cover. If one or more ink cartridges are empty, for example Black, the LCD shows Ink Empty Black and Replace Ink. b Pull the lock release lever down and take out the ink cartridge for the color shown on the LCD. C Open the new ink cartridge bag for the color shown on the LCD, and then take out the ink cartridge. d Remove the protective yellow cap (1). Each color has its own correct position. Insert the ink cartridge in the direction of the arrow on the label. f Lift each lock release lever and push it until it clicks, and then close the ink cartridge cover. GIf you replaced an ink cartridge, the LCD may ask you to verify that it was a brand new one. (For example, Did You Change Blck?) For each new cartridge you installed, press 1 (Yes) to automatically reset the ink dot counter for that color. If the ink cartridge you installed is not a brand new one, be sure to press 2 (No). If you wait until the LCD shows Note If the LCD shows No Cartridge after you install the ink cartridges, check that the ink cartridges are installed properly.
No. You need all the cartridges installed with functioning chips for your printer to work. The reason why you need all the colors when all you print is black is because a small amount of color prints when you print black. The manufacturers want to make up their R&D costs on the printers by selling lots of expensive ink.
Try running the cleaning tool included with the HP diagnostic software for your model printer. If that doesn't work, try cleaning the ink jets on the black cartridge directly with an alcohol swab. If this still doesn't work and you're sure that you have the correct model HP cartridge installed properly in the printer, you may have to replace the black cartridge with a new one to see if the cartridge itself is defective.
First make sure you are placing the right color cartridge into the right slot. Most Printers are touchy about the installation of ink cartridges. If the instructions say to press the cartridge into the slot until you hear a loud click, that's what they mean. If at first you don't succeed, remove the cartridge and reinsert it into the slot again and press on it hard till it clicks. Then your printer should work properly. Hope this is of some help. Bud
Remove the black ink cartridge.
Check the place where the new cartridge should go. Check for a round small piece like a bushing or a little piece of pipe, stuck at the ink entrance of the printing head. This is a piece from the old cartridge, that sometimes gets loose and remains in place, and when the new one is placed, it doesnot go down to the right place to make contact with the electric connectors in the printing head.
If nothing solves...reinstall the printer drivers.
Good luck and Merry Christmas
When one or more ink cartridges are empty, for example, Black, the LCD
shows “Ink Empty Black” and “Open Cover.” Close the printer’s document
support and the document tray.
Lift the top cover to the open position until it locks securely into place.
Pull the ink cartridge hook toward the front of the printer and remove
the color ink cartridge displayed on the LCD. Place the cartridge in a
plastic bag as it may still contain some residual ink and may leak.
Open the new ink cartridge bag for the color shown on the LCD and
remove the new ink cartridge. The cartridge cover may come off when you
open the bag. This is not uncommon and will not damage the cartridge.
Each color has its own correct position that is clearly labeled and
color coded inside the printer. Keep the ink cartridge in an upright
position when you insert it into slot. It will only fit in the correct
direction. Press down on the ink cartridge until the hook snaps over
If you replaced an ink cartridge while “Near Empty” was displayed on
the LCD, the LCD may ask you to verify that the replacement cartridge
was brand new one. Example: “Did You Change Black? 1.Yes 2.No.” For
each new cartridge you installed, press 1 on the dial pad to
automatically reset the ink dot counter for that color. If the ink
cartridge you installed is not a brand-new one, select 2.
