Protected mode: I cannot get Internet Explorer setting at the bottom to stay "on", it keeps showing "off" no matter what I do.

Double click the "Protected Mode".

Then "Internet Security Properties" window will open.
Check the Option that says "Enable Protected Mode" and then restart Internet Explorer.

Is free internet explorer 8 works as original to protect pc from virus

Hi Guest
Internet explorer 8 itself will not protect your Pc from viruses or malware , but it will make your browsing experience more secure and Avoid you going to phishing and scam sites by using the feature called Phishing Filter and Protected Mode ,
It is always advisable to install a seperate Anti Virus software for your Computer
Thanks And regards Aboobacker S

Dear Karen,
protected mode:
Protected Mode is an important step forward in security for Internet Explorer (IE); it helps protect users from attack by running an IE process with greatly restricted privileges on Windows Vista. While Protected Mode does not protect against all forms of attack, it significantly reduces the ability of an attack to write, alter, or destroy data on the user's machine or to install malicious code.

unknown Zone:

In the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser, a site may be identified as belonging to an "unknown zone". This means Internet Explorer could not determine if the site belongs to the Local Zone, the Trusted Zone, the Restricted Zone or the Internet Zone. It may mean the page contains a mixture of content - some of which is from the Trusted Zone, and some from another zone.

I have a sbg 900 motem and router combined how do i secure it for the internet

The router is a hardware firewall so your systems is already protected from intrusions. The internet can only see the routers i.p address and cannot see anything beyond that.If you want to be bulletproof do this as well. Do all your windows updates and keep them current. Get a good internet protection suite and keep it current.Norton Internet 2009 gets great scores from the experts and unlike old Norton products it is not a rescouce hog.It does all Antivirus,Spyware and Malware, root kit protection, anti phishing and tons more.

Are you running AVG 8 free anti Virus? Did you install it recently? There are some reports that AVG 8 free version has some issues causing this to happen with VISTA. If so try printing with AVG turned off (Careful where you go on the internet while it is off - suggest a trusted site like microsoft)

Then try with AVG running and disable IE7 protected mode,

Click Tools, then click Internet Options.

  1. Click the Security tab.
  2. To disable Protected Mode uncheck the box next to Enable Protected Mode to disable it.
  3. Click OK.
Note: Enabling or disabling protected mode requires Internet Explorer to be restarted

If it is AVG causing the issue perhaps try and see if they have a later version available as it is not recommended to run with protected mode disabled
