When a user starts a computer, portions of the operating system are copied from the computer's hard disk into memory.

Windows uses a swap file (page file) as memory, and is crucial for it to operate properly. Leave alone if this is what you are referring to.

Dual Boot

You may have overwritten your boot.ini file.

  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  • On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
  • Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the operating system that you want to start when you turn on or restart your computer.
  • Select the Display list of operating systems for check box, and then type the number of seconds for which you want the list displayed before the default operating system starts automatically.

    To manually edit the boot options file, click Edit. Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not modify the boot options file (Boot.ini), because doing so may render your computer unusable.

If both OS's are the same, you should be able to copy and paste the line for XP and simply change the drive letter to the location of the second OS.

My toshiba satellite pro/ 415cs laptop wont start up / says it needs a setup disk

If you are using the OEM operating system from Toshiba, use the disc which came with the laptop. But if you are using a retail operating system from Microsoft, use operating system setup disc.

You can attempt to use the appropriate disc to repair corrupted files. Take note that some Operating system files are unrepairable which leads you to installing the whole operating system.

Hope this helps.

Have a hp cam trying to install it on an ibm pc

I suggest try to check what type of Operating System you have. After you verify your Operating System, Download the driver from the manufacturer website.

Here's how you can check your Operating System:
Windows 7
Start->Control Panel->System and Security->System (in Category View)
Start->Control Panel->System (in Large or Small Icon View)

Start->Control Panel->System and Maintenance->System (Default View)
Start->Control Panel->System (Classic View)

I have installed Win 7 ultimate and after i have installed win xp sp3 in different drive. But now at booting the computer dosent show the operating system choice but instead win xp starts as the default...

When installing different versions of Windows, you must start with the oldest system first.

1. Booting from XP disc, create 2 partitions before installing and install XP to one of them.
2. After XP is complete, install W7 to second partition and after it is complete you will be given the OS System Boot choice at Start Up.

Cant start my laptop, mesage on the scrin ;The

you will have to format the laptop hard drive and re install the Windows Operating system.
The Boot agent is the start up program for the Operating system. If this is corrupted then you have a virus or malware that has corrupted the boot program.
2. After formatting and reinstallation of the Operating system you will need to download the Microsoft Essential anti-virus protection program ( free).
from Microsoft site.
I hope this helps.
