WD My Passport 160 GB Hard Drive

I have just bought one of these drives. It works fine with my notebook(XP) at work, home with my PC (Vista) works too but it's thinking too much. I have to plug it than wait for about a minute just to open My Computer, than another minute to open my directories. When I first installed the drive to PC it didn't work at all. But in the morning I started PC with WD plugged it worked perfect. When I plug the WD while PC working makes more problems. Also there were other flash disks which did the same problem, working too slow and too slow copy rates. I thought that's a problem of front panel USB, other USB ports doesn't accept WD at all. Don't know what to do. I'm just starting my PC plugged with WD and only copying files and unplugg it. If it's plugged I cant even open My Computer in time. My mother board is ASRock. Also having problems with my front panel microphone and headphones, they are not working.

i have first checked all my drivers and even updated which not necessary for WD. All my drivers look up to date. I still have the same problem. Not working when I connect the device while my PC working. Perfect when I start my PC while WD is connected (well I still need to wait a little bit until it recognizes what a WD device)

thanks anyway, I'll keep trying. It more looks like a problem with my PC but I cant understand what it is exactly...

The USB cable you are using is USb 1.1 and it will not give enough electricity to your WD.Or you may have disabled your USB ports by accident. The fornt ports of your computer won't give enough electricity to your WD again. See if your WD is vibrating.

Need driver & software

The Driver and software are built in, Stored on the WD it's self..
all you need to do is plug it in. It is a plug and play device.

WD Passport is not supported on XP or Vista 64bit
Xp and Vista do not put enough power to the usb ports to fire up the drive.
there is a cable you can get from WD that plugs into 2 USB ports to solve this issue.

I tried to format my 500gb WD passport essential with exfat using windows 7 for my mediastar pvr . Now neither pvr or windows 7 can see the harddrive

Windows 7 does _NOT_ support 'exfat' drives, as you have found out.
You can "format" the drive, to use 'FAT32' or 'NTFS' file-systems.

MY PASSPORT ESSENTIAL WD1600ME-00 is not recognized by plug-and-play in either of my HP Desktop Windows computers (One with XP, one with VISTA). Power light comes on when attached to any USB port. Device...

You run MS Windows Update to download and install the latest OS updates. Your WD external HDD should be detected after OS update.

For non updates system, try to connect WD to the USB Port where it worked before. If you have 4 USB ports for instance, try to connect it to these ports one try at a time. Windows XP might have assigned one USB port for your device before when it was working just fine.

WD320GB hard drive not working

Are you using a double power USB cable, which normally comes with W/D hard drives?

Also if the light on hard drive blinks the drive is not getting enough power from the USB port.

All the best!
