Hopefully you are not trying to put some new device into the port that might be too advanced for your system. Some systems can't handle things like a 1TB external drive.
Make sure you try something in the usb port that you know worked in the past and try different ports.
it should not require an adapter the bigger usb portion goes into the printer and the smaller will fit into your usb on your computer back ports. if the ports are to big you bought a mini usb adapter on accident. let me know if this helps.
The ethernet conection it one thing and the hard drive it's other. If you lost you ethernet conection go to My computer properties an on divice manager check on network adapters. If you have a question mark, replace the ethernet adapter.
If you have problem with the hard drive ypur computer dont start still on a black screen whith a messege.
usually the NIC or the Network Ethernet Card or what you called the ethernet card is gonna be inserted on the 4 white slots on the bottom of the picture.the Motherboard is located inside the computer tower when you open it.

Another aproach is if USB ..Just pull cable from computer and stick in some other USB port forcing computer to reload driver to that port.
