It seems like it is the first time you either own or using a microwave oven. Yes, there are more than one fan/motors inside a microwave, depending upon the model/type.

My Kitchenaid combo convection/mw works on convect but has a loud humming and no heat on microwave.

A loud humming noise in microwave mode will usually be a shorted high voltage diode or bad magnetron.

A simple mwo or a mwo with a lot of functions?

It depends. Do you just want to reheat leftovers, or do you want it to perform as a convection oven as well? "Better" only depends on what you actually want it to do!

I can't recommend a particular model, but stick with something where you're going to get support if the appliance fails.

Don't spend a lot of money on something that has more features than you really need.

I own Microwave /Convection Oven JVM1190. I used it last night but in the morning no power.

There is a small thermodisc temperature protector in the top of most MWO that cuts off power when over temp was reached or maybe fails all by itself.
I replaced two last year with resettable type but getting to them is a large job all by itself. RE: removing the top cover

My convection microwave will not heat up in convection mode. the microwave function works just fine. is there a way to troubleshoot and repair the problem?

usually if convection fails means there is problem in magnetron you hear an unusual buzzing noise, the magnetron (the component that actually generates the microwaves) or other electronic module may be broken. This is not easily fixed; contact a service technician.
please do rate me on the above said issue
