Hmmm Person with Oct 08 Warranty expiration when did you buy the laptop and when did it stop working ? (dates plz)

  • Anonymous May 07, 2009

There should be a class action lawsuite against HP/Compaq on this issue. There are way to many complaints of the same issue all over the internet with this make/model.
Like Orangegunner, same problem. One day it truned blue and worked, after reboot never again.
I called HP tech support, after paying for extended warranty, they still could not resolve problem.

This is my third time writing a comment, but yes I think too many people have this problem. I also wrote to BROADCOM and asked if there is an easy solution, but who knows if they'll get back to me. I tried everything imaginable. I even went to the compaq recovery manager to re-install the BROADCOM, then have to fo the F10 & F9 BIOS thing; Broadcom does show up in the device manger after I've done all that;then i updated it in the device manager-just in case,BUT still next time I shut off the computer-my wireless is gone once again-RRrrrrrrrrr. Getting really mad too.

I am hoping maybe BROADCOM can help us and maybe if enough people write to them, they'll want to fix this serious and frustrating problem!

has anyone firgured out a way to fix this yet?

  • Anonymous May 26, 2009

I have exactly the same problem... I got a new wifi module, and still didnt work.. Then got a new MB and this solved the problem. This has happened to me twice. First on my son's HP Laptop, now on my Daughter's Laptop (Same model presario HP730US) The MB i replace it with worked for about 5 months, now the wifi is gone again... Think there is something wrong hardware wise on these MB's.. I'll never buy another HP/Compaq again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the same issue today with my f700. The wireless assistance switch was amber in both on and off positions, and no onboard wireless adapter was showing in the device manager. I tried restoring the OS to factory defaults and doing the same with the bios with no luck.
I went to the store and bought a USB wireless adapter and installed the software. Somehow that got the onboard adapter to work as well. Go figure. I'm going to hold on to it in case this happens again.

In my experience with HP. They all seem to "shoot craps" 2 weeks to 2 months after the warranty expires, and it's usually fixed by wiping the hard drive clean, ie...remove their recovery partition....this seems to fix the problem in 90% of cases. Of course you have to do a "clean" install of another OS. And I recommend Windows 7, because of the simple fact of trying to find drivers is eliminated.

download software like driver detective then you have the clear idea

  • jacob000 Apr 21, 2011

This problem has something to do with the driver. Try to find a driver for the wireless adapter in a supported operating system. Here is a list you may take a look.

I have a compaq presario F756nr with an Atheros wireless wi-fi card in it. Can I replace the wi-fi card with a Broadcom 802.11 b/g wireless LAN card?

no you cannot replace the built-in wi-fi card...
if you try to change the drivers for atheros wi-fi to Broadcam driver, your wi-fi card will not function anymore.... but you can always install another WI-FI card in your laptop... you can buy a USB Adapter or a Cardbus(PCMCIA) adapter for this purpose...if you want your wi-fi signal strenth and range to be higher, you can opt to buy an adapter which comes under N standard....N standard wi-fi adapters are capable of connecting at a speed of more than 300mbps(practically) to any N standard device like router....

My Compaq Presario F700's Wi-Fi stopped working

can you check if the driver is properly installed?
- go to start, point to computer, right click then click manage, click device manager and see whether you have an exclamation mark or "X" sign on one of your devices. if yes, you need to un-install first the driver, restart machine, re-install the driver properly.

Cant enable wi-fi

You will need to check that the router is on first, then go to the internet settings on your computer, if the wi-fi doesnt show up try and SCAN so your computer will look for it. When it is found you will need to give it a password and then its ready to go

Have you checked in "device manager" to see if all drivers are installed for your hardware components?

Dec 05, 2008 | Compaq (325489-001) for presario 3000...

Wireless no longer works

1st Solution:
Check if the wi-fi card is properly installed under Device Manager. Go to Start then look for Control Panel on the right pane. Under Control Panel look for System and Maintenance and then click on Device Manager. Now under Device Manager look for Network Adapters and collapse or click the arrow next to it. Check if your wi-fi adapter is installed(10/100 or 10/1000 is your LAN adapter, wi-fi adapters usually indicates something like 802.11x(could be agn or g or b) or the word "wireless". If you don't see anything I mentioned above that means your computer is unable to detect any wi-fi adapters installed. Know if you found a wi-fi adapter but there is a yellow exclamation or question mark, all you have to do is re-install the drivers for your wi-fi adapter(you can download the drivers on the Compaq website for free.)

2nd Solution:
Check if the wi-fi is disabled or stopped, if you have a bulit in wi-fi adapter on your laptop they have a wi-fi switch on the side or near the function keys(F1, F2, F3 up to F12). Wi-fi button/switch will have a logo or marking of an antenna that has waves coming out of it and there is a LED light that will indicate if its on or off(for Comapaq laptops it's either a blue button at the front, near the function keys or at the front panel on the buttom edge.

If both fails then you may need to contact Compaq for further assistance.

Hope this will help you fixin the wi-fi problems on your laptop.

Drivers for Wi-Fi (drivers for Ethernet Controller and Modem Device on high definition audio bus)

Not much offered at Compaq's driver site for XP. For the modem driver, try the link below, it says it's for Vista, but it should work. If it doesn't then you will need the make and model of the modem, then go to the manufacturer's site or for the drivers, and the same for the wireless, make and model, manufacturer's site or driver guide. To be honest with you, modems are just about obsolete, unless you have dial up at home, you'll probably never use it.

Presario f700 drivers

You have to download XP drivers from the manufacturer's website. This normally happens because your harware was designed for the new OS(Vista).

Just go to and search for the model of your Laptop.
