Question about Zanussi Z57 / 3 Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Ice build-up on the inside top of of freezer door

I purchased my freezer (Frigidaire upright) on 9/28/07. I have had 3 repair person out to try to correct the problem of ice build-up on the inside of the door by the top shelf.
1st repairman said there was not enough air flow because the light shield was blocking flow. he put spacers under the shield.
I got ice build-up again.
2nd repairman said not enough spacers were added and added more.
I got ice build-up again.
3rd repairman said that is the way that the freezer will always be because no insulation is installed in the door, only on the front of the door and not inside the door.

If this is the way all these freezers work, and ice builds up then why did I buy a "frost free" freezer

I think Frigidaire needs to fix this problem or quit saying there freezers are "frost free"

The solution you gave was for a top and bottom unit, I have a up-right freezer, but the solution would be the same, poor design on behalve of Frigidaire Corp. Thank you much for your help.

This is a problem that the factory has released a bulletin on.They have released new hinges, and insulation for inside the door. So far I've only seen the bulletin for Kenmore upright freezers made by Frigidaire. Since it is a Kenmore the bulletin is a Sears Service Flash but the units are identical. For sears its SF46-517. They may extend the service to Frigidaire units but you'll have to contact Frigidaire about that.

This is just a general answer but it may mean that the door seal is leaking. Try running a dollar bill under the seal to see if that area is looser than the rest of the door seal.
Look inside the freezer for model number.

Sounds like you need to check if the unit went into a defrost cycle and made any ice build up inside the cabinet "slushy" and the water leveling itself and running down plastic liner parts to a place where it can escape underneath.

Freezer burn to food is caused by air & moisture in contact with it.
There should be a tight seal by the rubber gasket along all the inside edges of the freezer door. This gasket prevents unwanted hot moisture and hot air from entering the freezer compartment and causing ice build up. You can test the integrity of the rubber gasket seal by seeing how the freezer door will pinch a slip of paper in various spots around the freezer door. If the slip of paper pulls out easily, there is not a good seal at that spot. If that's the case (which I believe it is), the door gasket needs to be replaced. By the way, ice will build up over time because you need to access the food in the freezer, hence you will introduce moist air each time you open the freezer door.

I am experiencing frost build up on the top part of the door as well as the top part of the inside of the freezer. all other areas are fine

You have an air leak. Usually right where you frost build up is, however since hot air rises, sometimes this leak can be anywhere. Make sure your door closes tightly and your gaskets are clean and making good contact. You may have to adjust the gasket, adjust the door, or replace the door gasket. If there is ice on the floor of the freezer, you have a plugged drain line. In very rare instances we have found, where the freon lines enter the freezer, in the back or under the freezer, missing or fallen refrigeration putty that seals around the lines. Frost buildup around the inside top of the door of an upright Frigidaire Commerical Frostfree Freezer Mod# FFU20IC8Cw2

This happens when your thermistor gets frozen along with the coils or there is a clogging of the freezer drain which causes Ice to build up and spread to the system. Another issue is that your thermistor may be faulty, telling the system inaccurate temperature. Incorrect freon pressure can also be a cause. I would advise first to have the ice melted by letting the unit stay unplugged and have it cleaned while at it.

Ice build-up on the inside top of of freezer door

yea def , not normal, nor an acceptable amount of ice forming there( good pic). heres what i have been told to try and with good results
first make sure the door gasket is sealing all the way,(small gaps in ht emagnets at extreme corners) is common but with a little amount of "mortite"or "permagum can sometimes be insterted behind the corner of gasket to assist filling the void.
second a small amound of a white/clear silicone be applied to the outer perimtere of gasket, to minmize air movemnt from between gasket and door panel.
lastley in oyour second pic i see "frost free" written on a plastic air deflector. you can remove that with 3-4 screws on backside of it, and then reinstall with a small spacer so as the baffle now with sit with a 3/8in. gap between it and the top of the freezer liner.( a brass ferrel from the compression fitting of a plumbing fitting is just the right size)..... the theory behind this is to prevent the air from gatting "trapped" in the void created when the door closes-- air can now pass back and forth freely.
I hope this gives you some satisfaction if not I would advise another tech be sent who is willing to call for factore tech support( ths is where i got my info from)
