Hi Henry,
This is a common issue with many other motherboard manufactures. Your question has been answered by Gigabyte. Click on this link:
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/FAQ_List.aspx?FAQID=1493

As a owner of an Asus motherboard with 4GB of memory, windows only shows 3GB of memory & the reason is that same as Gigabyte's.

So this is normal.

By the way Henry, if you are currently using the on-board VGA graphics card it is also using your system memory to run. You can enter your bios & lessen the total amount of system memory being uses by the on-board graphics. You can also add an AGP graphics card with its own memory. This should increase your system memory.

nvidia 9600gt agp version 512kb vram.

if you get a card with 1gig of ram on it, you would have to have at least thqat much, 1gig, installed into your system ram as well.

Computer does not see all ram. I have 2 of the same 512mb ram sticks it only sees one 512. If I only put in on at a time each one works but not both together. It does not show up in post or windows xp sp2...

u do need to remember that when you use 2 ram "sticks": 1. they CANNOT BE putted in slots directly next to each other. leave slot between them free. 2.they need to be exact same frequency and type [ddr1 or 2 or 3] and they both must have or not error connection on as if bios program upgrade utility is damaged do not try to upgrade bios as u may damage your motherboard beafore u try with 1gb stick refer to otherboard manual for ddr type and momory frequency

DDR2's only showing half installed RAM

IF THE SYSTEM SAYS YOU HAVE 1GB RAM THAN YOU HAVE 1 GIG OF RAM, EVEN THOU SOMEONE TOLD YOU YOU HAD 2-512MG=1GB.

HERE IS HOW I SEE WHAT YOU ARE SAYING YOU HAVE 2-DDR-2 1 GIG STICKS THAT MEAN IF 1 IS INSTALLED THAN YOU HAVE 1 GB AND IF YOU COULD GET 2 STICKS WORKING TOGETHER THAN YOU WOULD HAVE 2GB RAM.
1 CHIP SET = 1GB RAM
2 CHIP SET = 2GB RAM

YOU MOTHERBOARD MAY NOT ALLOW THAT MUCH RAM, OR WHAT I MEAN THE BIOS MAKE UP THE AMOUNT OF RAM.

TO RULE OUT ANY BAD CHIP SETS OR GOOD RAM OR BAD RAM.

TAKE THE PEACE OF RAM THAT IS WORKING OUT AND REPLACE IT WITH THE OTHER PEACE AND SEE IF IT WILL RUN.
IF IT WORKS THAN LEAVE THAT ONE IN PLACE AND INSTALL THE SECOND PEACE IN THE SECOND SLOT.
IF BOTH CHIP SET ARE GOOD THAN BOTH SHOULD WORK OKAY TOGETHER.
IF THERE IS A PROBLEM, IT MAYBE SOME DUST IN THE MEMORY LOTS
OR THE SLOT MAYBE DAMAGED.
OR
THE CHIP DESIGN LAYOUT MAYBE THE OPPOSITE SIDE, THIS MAY MEANS THE CHIPS MAY FACE EACH OTHER, OR FACE OUTWARD FROM EACH OTHER.

Installing 2 sticks of 1 gb ram = DRAM error beeps

If the computer is working with one gb stick and not the other, try this:

Swap the sticks with the one that does work. If it works then its the memory card slot on the motherboard. If it doesn't boot up, then it's the memory stick.

The Bios on the laptop motherboard only will recognize a total of 1gig Ram. So the 256 stick would be removed and 2- 512 sticks installed.

Memory upgrade

The memory should be DDR II Ram. To find how much ram you have simply click on Start then right click on "My Computer" and click properties. Chances are you have 512 ram. It will tell you in the lower right hand side along with your processer and windows version. Once you have found out how much ram you have, turn off your computer flip it upside down and pull out the battery. Then you should see a cover with one or two screws in it that measures about 3 inch by 4 inch. Remove the screws and take the cover off. This is where your memory goes. If there is 512 memory in your computer you will either have 1 512 memory stick or 2 256 sitcks. Remember that any time you upgrade memory it is best to take out the old memory and replace with either one stick of higher ram or two of equal ram. Never mis a 512 and a 256 or 512 and 1gig ect. Take the ram stick/sticks out and bring them down to the store with you just so as to get the correct memory. Also, remember when you replace the memory, if you are just upgrading to one 1gig stick to put it in the A DIMM slot. This is the primary ram slot.

1Gig not found

You may also need to clear the cmos settings as the ram timing and detection may need to be cleared. JBAT1 or CLRCMOS or RTC or refer to the motherboard manual for clearing the cmos, re insert your new ram and try again, although you need to set the time and date again.
