SOURCE: Computer Printer

Everyone is right as far as it being software vs. hardware. The printer and other peripherals comunicate with a computer via a small program or softwarecalled a "driver". You first need to go the manufacturers website "like www.hp.com" and go to their support page. Here you can locate the newest release of their drivers. You will need to locate the correct driver by looking for your printers model driver and it might specify your operating system "like Windows XP". Follow the instructions on how to install the driver because it might or might not require you to uninstall your current driver. If there are no instructions on how to install the driver, then follow the recomendations of going to the printers properties and deleting the printer. After this isdone, go ahead and install the new driver by runing the self executabe file that you just downloaded. Restart your PC and your printer should pick up the new driver. If it does not, then when you get a message that asks you to locate the driver, simply browse your way to the location of the downloaded files. I know this can be kinda confusing but inthe end it will save you $ Or better yet, if you tell me twhat printer you have, then I can send you a link to the driver. :)

My printer page says 'idle' and prints up only blank pages. I unplugged it and plugged it back in. It still says 'idle.'

I'm not understanding your issue. Is it that it says "idle" or is it that it doesn't print in color...?

idle is usually a status that is displayed in the printer status icon in your "tray" bottom left hand side of windows. This means nothing is currently happening with your printer. So I'm not clear that this is a problem for you, please explain.

To better help you, what model is your printer? Are you connected to the printer wirelessly, via USB or via ethernet?

I should be able to help more with these details.

It won't print and the light keeps flashing. I lost the instructions!

The flashing light could indicate either a communication problem between one of your cartridges and the printer, a short in one of the cartridges, paper jam or the cartridge carrier has stalled. Please follow the steps below to fix the problem:

  1. Remove the sheets of paper from the feeder. Make sure there are no foreign objects or debris in the feeder.
  2. Open the printer cover and remove both the cartridges.
  3. While the cover is open, ensure there are no paper jams and the cartridge carrier is free from obstructions.
  4. Close the printer cover.
  5. Re-brick your printer. Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds.
  6. When the printer turns on, reinsert one cartridge first.
  7. Close the printer cover and check the light status.
  8. If light on printer is normal, open the printer cover and reinsert the other cartridge. Check the light status.
  9. Replace whichever cartridge is causing the light to flash with a new cartridge. You can also try to insert a different known working cartridge to determine if the other is faulty.
  10. Load some paper. Try to print a document again to verify that the problem is fixed.

Replaced black toner..now printer won't print any

In this case, actually it is not the Black toner that got depleted. Here the message being displayed indicate that one of the color Toner supply need to be replaced as it got depleted and currently the printer is printing in Black and white using the Black toner cartridge.

in this case, to troubleshoot these issues please try performing the following and check for the results.

* 1. Check for the level of the toner cartridges:

a) Check from the HP Toolbox application. Here are the steps to be performed from your PC:

* Access the Toolbox software.
* Select the Status tab.
* Select the Device status option.

Here you can check for the supplies status in terms of the % remaining for each toner cartridges.

b) By checking the supplies status from the printer control panel display.

On the printer display when printer is in Ready mode the supplies status can be checked from the supplies level indicator. Each toner cartridge and the Imaging drum level will be indicated by a bar which varies according to the level of the supplies present.

c) Print the supplies status page from the printer.

* On the printer control panel menu, press Menu .
* Use the (Right Arrow) button to select Reports, and then press Enter .
* Use the (Right Arrow) button to select Supplies Status, and then press Enter .

If any of the color toner cartridges and the Imaging drum have a low supply level replace them with genuine HP print cartridges.

The part numbers of the consumables are as follows:

* Black print cartridge - Q3960A
* Cyan print cartridge - Q3971A
* Magenta print cartridge - Q3973A
