Brand new Generator not working

Just bought a new Coleman Powermate PM0525202.03 Electric Generator 2 weeks ago and the engine works but not the generator. It worked for about 6 days and then just died one night. What could be the problem? My generator starts and runs fine, but no power from the outlet. I've tried the circuit breaker, no difference. I don't have a service/owner manual, I looked on the website and there is none available for my model. How do you "Jump start a generator?? Mine is a Powermate model PM0542000 5 HP, 2250 watts.

Okay, I opened the housing with the outlet on it and found a component I don't recognize that looks like it exploded! There's white sticky material and what looks like packing coming out of the end of it. It's black and has 2 wires attached to one end. There's a number on the side, maybe a part #, HD 9135. It also says TEAPO 130_F200V NEGATIVE 85*C. This must be the problem, thank you for your input. Cher

  • Basically you take the plastic cover off that goes over the brushes on the back of the generator. Take a 12 volt car battery and apply voltage to them .
  • The generator has to be running when you do this and you also have to have something like a light plugged in.
  • The light should begin to get brighter and brighter until the full output of the generator is working. I am not positive but I believe that this is caused by an "exciter" capacitor in the generator getting discharged.
Again, these generators need a charge to "jump start" them and it is done via a capacitor.

Since it is brand new, I recommend simply returning it for a working model instead of trying to putter around with it and void any warranty you may have..

Check the alternator,
check that the alternator is running, if there is no power at all probably the alternator belt had slipped out or is not in tension.
Otherwise the alternator is faulty.

Have a look.

Try checking the connection of the cords that come from the actual generator to the socket that is supposed to give out power. You may need the connection re-soldered or repaired. Then try checking that the fuse for the socket is not blown because it is made to blow if something that is plugged up to the socket is using too much power.

if it doesnt turn over how did you test the spark?

if i have read it wrong then always try a new spark plug, these can fail under compression but will spark happily outside the cylinder.
if it wont turn over then it could be siezed or dropped a valve.
