Question about Food Mixers

K45SS leaks lubricant

The mixer works but is a little noisy in the gearing. It is leaking a brown oil like substance onto the area where you attach the beaters. oil leaks onto the counter. We were also told we didn't use our mixer enough and that is why it leaks oil. I'm quite handy but would be leery of taking the mixer apart to replace the seal without a diagram. The $125. to have a $200. mixer fixed is a bit out of line.
Is there a place to get a good diagram for KitchenAid mixers?

Leaking of oil in a stand mixer is not necessarily indicative of a large problem.

Kitchenaid stand mixers are overpacked with oil to last the lifetime of the motor. If the motor sits idle for some time (is not used), the oil may begin to drip from the gears and settle. Oil leakage may primarily be seen from around the beater shaft or planetary action.

A stand mixer can lose up to a 1/4 cup of oil before it needs to be serviced.

It is recommended to run the mixer on speed 10 for 2 minutes in order to redistribute oil back into the motor. In order to prevent future occurences, this is recommended to be done every 3 weeks if mixer is not being used.
Exploded parts views for all mixers are available at www.kithchenaid.com. Click "Customer Care" in the upper right hand corner of the main page, and then select "Locate Manuals and Guides." You will need to enter the unit's model number exactly as it appears on the bottom of the mixer. It will be listed on a white sticker.

SOURCE: K45SS leaks lubricant

The solution?...the oil leak is a very common problem with the kitchen aid mixer. If you don't use your mixer a lot the gasket dries out and the gear casing oil leaks. Doesn't that sound like a tasty ingredient to add to your cookies?? You'd think that a gasket wouldn't dry out so quickly...but it does. You'll spend about $125 to get it fixed at a shop. If you seach the net (consumeraffairs.com) you'll find hundreds of complaints just like yours....and mine. Kitchen Aid's response is basically tough luck, we got your money.

What kind of oil use this

I came across a manual for a Blakeslee f-40 60 80 and here is what it said. Hope this helps

Lubrication
The planetary and spiral-beveled gears are self-lubricated for life. The lubrication used is micromly grease and must be re-applied if gears are replaced. The transmission uses Mobil "delvic 1" synthetic oil which should last the normal life of the mixer. No lubrication is required for the auxiliary drive hub.
If lubrication is applied to the auxiliary hub a grease-like substance will possibly leak out causing damage to the product.
Applications of any lubrication will Void Warranty.

I'm having oil leak out of the top of the unit? It's still working all right though, what could cause that? I don't want oil going into the mixing bowl.

It can be that the lubrication oil that was meant for the gear drives loosened off and flowed out. You can use a good wipe of the excess that have flown out, wash off with light oil and clean dry on the drive.
Occasionally you can check this to repeat the oiling and dry wiping so as to keep the top mechanism lubricated without total drying.

MY kitchenaid mixer has always oozed oil but suddenly today I can no longer attach the dough hook. The spring doesn't want to move enough for me to attach it. It was fine yesterday.

The oil that is "oozing" is actually grease. If it is laying on its side the grease will leak out but isn't really an issue. If it is leaking while the machine is right side up, it usually means you have a problem with the seal. When it comes to the spring not bending allowing the attachments to lock onto the shaft, that is a bizarre problem as the spring is just tension and isn't internally attached to anything inside the machine. If you want you can replace the planetary gear but that seems a bit drastic just for the spring. We usually recommend 1800Parts for parts and accessories because they carry EVERYTHING! So the seal they might have but I would bring the machine to someone to look at the planetary gear to make sure everything is in working order. If you are in New York you can bring it to us.

Leaking grease around the area where the attachments are mounted

Carefully pry the chrome ring from the gearhead of the mixer. Item 28 on this page :

You will find 5 screws under the chrome ring. Tighten them and the oil (grease) will stop leaking from the gasket which seals the gearcase halves.

My K45SS is leaking some kind of oil or grease from the part of the mixer above where the mixer part attaches. It otherwise seems to be functioning fine.

its gear oil from the gear box that the motor turns to make the beaters turn, you need to replace the seals or keep adding food grade oil before you dry out the gearbox and ruin it

My classic k45ss leaks oil which drips from the verticle shaft, and my wife says it is making a "funny noise". Maybe it is low on oil, but I turned it on its side to find the model number, and it leaked...

Firstly I would take the head apart to find out what has failed. The oil you see should be a thick grease. Normally it is thick enough not to leak in this way. Has it been repaired and the wrong grease used? If it is making a funny noise it could be that one of the gears has failed. Most parts are easily available. Have a look at the parts list at:

Oil leakage during move KA KSM90BU

no, mixer is fine. clean with damp cloth and use it. The gears are lubricated with grease and the oil is a little residue from this. Alls well.

Brown oily substance is leaking out of the mixer

It's the gear lubricant. It's food grade so no panic of contaminated food required. When it is all done leaking you may need to buy a new mixer or order a repair kit and open it up before the gears get ruined. - good luck- Ned-

I went to Kitchen Aid'sKitchen Aid's web site and had an on line chat with a tect support person name Jessica. She told me that if the mixer is not used a small of oil will leak out. to fix the problem you must run the mixer for a few minutes every month or so. This seems to work.
