Clean up scanner error

I get this error message. Have cleaned the scanner carefully about 8 times, including using alchohol. I've even reset the machine and cleared all data.

Any suggestions. Can't fax or scan.

Thanks for you help.

Paper out error

Have you tried a full media calibration from the menu (removing 8" of label from the backing)? Also if a label has left any pieces behind on the rollers, strike plate, etc it can cause this problem. I use a solvent like Goo Gone to make it clean, but be careful not to wipe the sensors with it. Also I have seen this when my users miss a roller when loading the ribbon. Make it clean, load it carefully and usually it works.

My printer says it's unable to clean 46? it's a mfc printer LC-51 Series ink

Please note that this error code appears when the container in the printer that is responsible for storing used / discarded ink is full or registers as full.

The following instructions will guide you through the process of resetting the printers self clean counter so the error will go away but in the event that the ink absorbing box is actually full and this is not an erroneous message the error message will trigger again immediately.

Machine Error 46 - Purged Ink Box Full MFC620CN/420CN/410CN/210C and FAX2440C

The machine counts all purge (cleaning) operations in order to prevent the internal ink absorber box from overflowing with purged ink. An "initial purge", for example, advances the purge counter by 187 + 420 = 607. When the purge counter approaches 6400, an internal "Machine Error 46" is generated. Further purge operations are prohibited, and therefore the printer becomes unuseable.

When an internal Machine Error 46 is generated, the user will see an "Unable to Clean" external message and will be unable to use the printer. The "Unable to Clean" external message can relate to many different internal error codes however.

The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed.

If there is a Machine Error 46, it is necessary to dismantle the printer, replace the ink absorber box (or possibly break the ink absorber box open and clean its absorbent sponges under a tap), re-assemble the printer and reset the purge counter to zero.

Resetting purge counter MFC620CN/420CN/410CN/210C and FAX2440C

1) Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC210C all four photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode). Care is needed in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently corrupted.

FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again).

Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the "up arrow" key four times to enter the maintenance mode).

2) Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine's log information list (function code 80).

3) Press the Black Start key several times to scroll through the log information list to reach the purge counter. The purge counter is the 25th item in the list.

4) Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero.

5) Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.

6) Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state.

Also please note that if the ink box is full and the error code is reset the printer may begin to spill out excess used / discarded ink.

I suggest purchasing a new ink absorber box and installing it.

What does ##343 mean?

##345 is jammed cartridge error. Reasons could include:

-Foreign material or dried ink in head cleaning unit (also known as "purge unit") , or waste ink pump jammed up. Make sure waste ink pump rotates freely, after cleaning. Clean the waste pump-hose too! Waste ink pump is located under head cleaning system.

Symptons are:

-Grinding noise (very loud)
-Flashes error code ##345

Short fix:
1.Take apart and wash the ink clogged mechanical parts. Use hot water.
2. Reset waste ink counter

Long fix:
The following operation takes several hours / days to complete.

-Take apart the whole printer, so there is only a metal frame left, with couple of paper-rollers, and motors, and the "Print-head cleaning" -system. Wash this cleaning-system.

-Mark all wires that look the same (especially white flat ones), take photographs when disassembling.

In detail, remove at least following items:
-Main Power lead!
-Casing (Use bright flashlight to see TWO front cover-screws under the dark plastic!)
-Scanner (BEWARE of fragile flat-wires)
-Main electronic controller board
-Metal plate, plastic cover, and some others.
-Plastic base plate
-All materials that might absorb water. (two sponges, and one rubber foam part)

The two sponges are between metal frame and base plate, they absorb excess ink. Wash these separately, and dry, or change for new. (I left the shorter one out, when assembling)

There is also one long rubber foam part that is near where paper comes out, (visible from outside the printer, when cover is opened).

To get rid of the excess ink: Wash dirty parts heavily for 10 to 15 minutes with hot water. When out-coming water is clear, then it is clean.

-Let it to dry for couple of days, but you can use your imagination - compressed air could help it dry faster.

-Assemble it back together

How to reset waste ink counter (you should clean the printer also):

*AF-Key = Additional Functions key = the black button with the star in a head above it.

1) Enter SERVICE MODE. (Press AF-Key, followed by "scan", "copy", "scan" -Keys)
2) Select TEST MODE (press right arrow button 13 times).
3) Hit -OK-
4) Select [8] PRINTER TEST
5) Hit -OK-
6) It'll now say "- 8-2 +" press the right arrow key once to get "- 8-3 +"
7) Hit -OK-
8) Select 0. [INK COUNT].
9) Hit -OK-
10) It should return to showing the "8: Printer Test - 8-3 +"
11) Press the [Stop/Reset]key - (black key with triangle and circle on it) - (returning to the state of 4), and then press the [ON/OFF] key.

Cleaning the print head:

At any time, DO NOT wipe the actual print head with your fingers. Use ONLY water.

-Remove print head assembly from printer.
-Remove ink tanks.
-Use running warm water, wash away the excess ink that is dried around the print head.
-Take one disposable mug, fill with hot water, drop the print head assembly in there, and let it soak for an hour, or so.
(-IF you have massaging shower head, with spray jet -function, use this to deep clean the actual print head.)
-Dry it up carefully, do not wipe actual print head, just tap gently with soft paper.
-Install ink tanks, install assembly to printer, let it settle for some time (5-30 minutes)
-Run Nozzle check, cleaning, print head alignment.

This should do the trick.

Answer extracted from service manual and Techimo.

Good Luck,

-LL

Unable to clean ... Brother MFC 3240C

Machine Error 46, Purged Ink Box Full

The machine counts all purge (cleaning) operations in order to prevent the internal ink absorber box from overflowing with purged ink. An initial purge, for example, advances the purge counter by 187 420 = 607. When the purge counter approaches 6400, an internal "Machine Error 46" is generated. When an internal Machine Error 46 is generated, the user will see an "Unable to Clean" external message and will be unable to use the printer. The "Unable to Clean" external message can relate to many different internal error codes however.

The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: unplug the unit, hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the power plug while holding down the Menu/Set key. The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed. Unplug and re-plug the unit again before continuing to the steps below.

If there is a Machine Error 46, it is necessary to dismantle the printer, replace the ink absorber box (or possibly break the ink absorber box open and clean its absorbent sponges under a tap), re-assemble the printer and reset the purge counter to zero.

Resetting purge counter:

Need to reset purge counter due to error 46

MFC-5440CN saved from the tip!
"Unable to Clean" message - found TrickyDicky's sltn 4 for various printers.
Went into maint mode as per sltn 4 - verified error 46.
"The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed."

Keyed in 80 - stepped through the items with "down" key and located Purge Counter.
"Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero
Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state."

This worked brilliantly - no need to tamper with any parts of the printer. Purge Counter reset did it all. Fully functional printer.

Thanks TrickyDicky for info on verifying the error code and purge reset
