'Unable to clean' problem with Brother DCP-115C Printer

I was told by Brother that 'Cannot Clean' (fault 460) means that the absoption pads needs to be replaced. Their sponsored engineer estimated a cost of about £80 to replace the pads although the 14 months old machine only cost £40 new and was used about 12 times. I have now acquired new absorption pads for the Brother DCP-115C printer. How can I access the old ones on the machine and reset the purge counter? Thanks R. Forde chaz_forde@yahoo.co.uk

Pull out the AC plug
- put back the AC plug while holding down the menu button and keep holding it (15 sec)
- now you are entering the MAINTENANCE mode and error 46 pops up in the display
- select 8 by using the arrow buttons ,push OK and select 0 and push OK
- 00:00 00:01 OK (the display is showing this message)
- now push the MONO button 25 times until you see PURGE: xxxxx
- Select 2, push ok, select 7,push ok,select 8,push ok, select 3,push ok
- the purge counter indicates now: purge: 00000
- switch off the printer ,switch it on
- ready to print
-

The only remark is that your waste ink box is too full with ink. Ink flooding might be happening

machine error 46 means that your printer's purge unit has reached its counter limit and needs replacing, the reason i say this is because your machine has done alot of work and parts will be warn in your m/c, if you just reset the counter you will end up with ink througout your machine, normally when your printer is up for a purge unit its better to get a new machine with new cartridges and a 12 month warranty and no wear. u can get the new brother for about $79 wich is by fare a way better way to go. and with the new brother the inks are alot cheaper than earlier models wich is a bonus.
you the reset procedure for the m/c and pruge but just doing a reset will not cure this problem you need to replace purge unit and do a counter reset on your purge unit, (used to clean the printhead) thats why it says unable to clean,

The machine counts all purge (cleaning) operations in order to prevent
the internal ink absorber box from overflowing with purged ink. An
initial purge, for example, advances the purge counter by 187 + 420 =
    607. When the purge counter approaches 6400, an internal "Machine Error
46" is generated. Further purge operations are prohibited, and
    therefore the printer becomes unuseable.

    When an internal
Machine Error 46 is generated, the user will see an Unable to Clean
external message and will be unable to use the printer. The Unable to
Clean external message can relate to many different internal error
    codes however.

The user can establish the internal Machine Error
Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off),
hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine
(power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed.

    If
there is a Machine Error 46, it is necessary to dismantle the printer,
replace the ink absorber box (or possibly break the ink absorber box
open and clean its absorbent sponges under a tap), re-assemble the
printer and reset the purge counter to zero.

    Solution no. 1. (DCP-110C / DCP-115C / DCP-120C / DCP-130C):

The proper reset code sequence to reset DCP printers without numeric keypad should be as follows:

    1.
press buttons Set, Menu, Mono Start one by one, followed by up arrow
key four times. this should all be done as short a time as possible,
    around 3 seconds.

    2. enter maintenance mode 80 by pressing the up/down arrow key and set key to select numbers 8 and 0

    3. press up arrow key several times to get to the Purge item

    Solution no. 1. (DCP-110C / DCP-115C / DCP-120C / DCP-130C):

The proper reset code sequence to reset DCP printers without numeric keypad should be as follows:

    1.
press buttons Set, Menu, Mono Start one by one, followed by up arrow

    . enter 2, 7, 8 and 3 using arrow/set keys to reset the counter

    5. press Stop/Exit key to go to root of maintenance mode

    6. enter 9,9 to exit maintenance mode

    Solution no. 2. (DCP-110C / DCP-115C / DCP-120C / DCP-130C):

    Here's how...

    1. Pres 'menu', 'mono start' then 'menu' one by one...

    2. Press the arrow up or down to go to 'maintenance 80'.

    3.
Press 'mono start' several times to go to 'Purge'. Finding the PURGE
will show some numeric value which is I assume the number of times the
    printer had cleaned.

    4. Press 'arrow up' key and scroll for
number "2" then press "set". Do the same for numbers 7, 8 and 3. After
you have entered this combination, the purge numeric value will be
    reseted to 00000.

    That's it...

Solution no. 3. (for printers with numeric keypad):

    Resetting purge counter on: MFC-620CN / MFC-420CN / MFC-410CN / MFC-210C and FAX-2440C:

    1.
Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC-210C all four
photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode). Care is needed
in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently
    corrupted.

FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the
Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to
complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop
    key to try again).

Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set
and Black Start keys. Next press the up arrow key four times to enter
    the maintenance mode.
Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to
call up the machine's log information list (function code 80).

    3.
Press the Black Start key several times to scroll through the log
information list to reach the purge counter. The purge counter is the
    25th item in the list.

    4. Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero.

    5. Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.

    6. Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state.

Hi,

To my knowledge, the waste ink absorption pad would be directly underneath the ink cartridge holder/print head assembly when at rest (parked). The carriage would have to be moved away from the rest/parked position to gain access. You would need preferably a pair of tweezers to lift out the old pad and replace with new.

As to the "reset the purge counter", pls try:

  1. press the Menu & Mono start keys. next press the up arrow key 4 times to make the machine enter the maintenance mode.
  2. Enter 8 & 0 by using the up arrow key & SET keys.
  3. press the mono start key several times untill the purge count appears on the LCD.
  4. enter 2 7 8 & 3 by using the up arrow key & set keys to reset the purge count to zero
  5. press the stop/exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
  6. enter 9 twice by using the up arrow & set key's to exit from maintenance mode
Above steps should be performed as a continuous and smooth key entries with no pauses.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi and welcome back.

Appreciate the update. A detailed procedure on how to remove and replace the waste ink absorption pad is described here. Unfortunately it is not in English. There are pictures/illustration though to guide you. Should you want an English translation, copy the link in a Goggle search box, click on Search and it would appear as first among the choices. Rather than clicking on it, click on the "http://www.hstt.net/refill-faq/inside.ht...">Translate this page".

Again thank you for coming back to FixYa.

If you used the machine only 12 times it is impossible that you have a 'Cannot Clean' (fault 46, not 460) because the absorption pads needs to be replaced.

The absorption pads needs to be replaced after the machine has done at least 2000 copies or more, depending on the usage.

This problem is not even related to a printer counter in need to reset, this if the fact that the machine had been used 12 times is true.

Try unplugging the machine first.

If this does not reset, do the following:

Enter in service mode, by unplugging power cord, then holding down Menu/Set key, while you plug back the power cord at the same time (be careful doing this)
The diagmnostic mode will display an error code, if it does not , then the machine is OK.

If there is still the error code:

Use the down key until you get Purge Counter on the menu.
Press the combination of keys 2, 7, 8, 3. This will reset the purge count.
Press the Stop or Exit key to return to maintenance mode main menu.
Now press twice key number 9 to return the printer to the original mode.
If the printer is stuck in standby then unplug main power again.

If this cannot fix the problem there is an internal fault that is probably not related with waste ink tank and absorption pads.

Normally the reset should purge the print counter, and get rid of the problem.

Yellow is one of the colours used to produce a shade of red.

I don't know how but ther must be a way to print a test page to see if the print heads need cleaning I've never used a brother.

Unable to clean message in brother dcp-115c aio

I saw on this site codes for another MFC to clear memory and reset the cleaning unit count code to zero. It worked on two of my brother mfc 820cw units. The third mfc 5840cn had unable to print error message 46- nothing at Brother. they want you to take everything to a repair shop.they don't help at all. Then the error went to 4F when I tried toclear the memory. As Iunderstand that message- it means I have to replace the printer head. Have no clue where or what it is. But I can read a manual as well as anyone and follow directions to fix it! Can't be worse than it is now! Good luck
