Prevent items getting sucked through the pump

Items keep getting sucked through the pump and causing a FL code and then the pump won't work. Last time it was a pair of nickers that ended up in the reservoir. Is there something that can be done to prevent this problem. The other day I had to pull a pillow case from under the spinner.

Thanks for the advice. Perhaps after the holiday I can afford a new one. In the meantime, I will give Sears a call. There was a class action lawsuit on this washer, however we did not qualify as our first out of pocket repair happend after it was two years old.

I have had the same problem off and on for 2 years!!!! My suggestion is GET RID OF IT NOW!!!. We have replaced the motor twice and the water pump 5 times. This machine needs to be recalled. I have had large articles of clothing sucked down into the motor and even the washer bag that holds the small items was sucked down. The last straw was when 2/3s of my king size comforter was pulled under the barrel. I love this washer at first, but as soon as the warrenty expired it has been a nightmare. All I can say is complain to Sears and demand the fix it for free!! They've fixed mine the last 2 times and gave me a gift card for the inconveince, but for the other expenses I have put into this washer, I could have replaced it with 3 by now. I was told today by Lowes that they stopped making these calypso washers(Whirlpool the Kenmore, too) because the design is so flawed and they still won't recall the wothless thing! Take my advice before you lose your shirt....throw it out!!! Good Luck, Tammy, MA

Error code FL flashes and my calypso washer keeps beeping. Won't start just shows the code.

FL error - Flood condition

"FL" flashes if any overfill condition occurs. This condition occurs when excessive water in the tub causes the overfill switch to trip. The control must realize that the trip was due to an overfill condition instead of a suds lock condition in order for "FL" to be displayed.

With an overfill condition, the beeper repeats a warning every 10 seconds with no time out. The pump is cycled in drain mode for 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off until the overfill switch resets or power is discontinued to the unit. Press STOP/CANCEL to clear the display.

Hope this helps.

Washer won't drain..like filter is clogged

The FL error code means:
Flood Condition:
FL flashes if any overfill condition occurs. This condition occurs when excessive water in the tub causes the overfill switch to trip. The control must realize that the trip was due to an overfill condition instead of a suds lack condition in order for FL to be displayed

With an overfill condition, the beeper repeats a warning every 10 seconds with no time-out. The pump is cycled in drain mode for 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off until the overfill switch resets or power is discontinued to the unit.

Press STOP/CANCEL to clear the display.

This problem I see on these are the water pumps getting clogged with lint or other things, causing the pump not to pump all of the water out at times.

There is a check "valve" in the drain assembly that seems to sometimes cause problems with the FL error code. You can remove this piece, and might avoid changing the pump.

"F21" (AKA SD) is a Long (SLOW) Drain error (LD). If the drain time exceeds 8 minutes this error code will be displayed. In addition, a "SUDS" error may also be displayed. This may be an indication of a drain pump problem and/or clog in the drain line. You will need to check the following:

1.First, attempt to unplug the washer for at LEAST 30 minutes to reset the Central Control Unit (CCU). Sometimes this is all that is required to correct momentary glitches with the unit. If the error code returns, proceed to step 2.
2.Check the drain hose to make sure it is not kinked or clogged.
3.Check the electrical connections to the pump and ensure the pump is running.
4.Remove the drain pump filter and check for foreign objects and/or debris.
To check the drain pump, click on the following link for step-by-step instructions

If the above procedures do not correct the problem, it is recommended by the manufacturer to replace the drain pump.

FL code and 1" of water won't drain

Every time mine does this it has strings stuck in the pump. Remove the pump and either take it apart on puld the junk out of it it or do what I did and go to FirstSource pay 10% for a life time waranty and buy a new pump. I've replace it about once a year. Check the seal around the swashplate in the bottom of the drum it may need to be replaced along with the u-joint. If this is worn it allows more **** to be sucked into the pump. I never buy whirlpool again. I have 2 appliances that give me constant grieve a whirlpool flame lock water heater and this expensive piece of junk.

Error Code FL

I've had this issue three times. On the first case, I found my external drain hose ( the hose from your washing machine to the drain in your wall) was clogged with a penny. The original external drain hose has a valve that keeps water from coming back into the washing machine. The penny had lodged in the vlave. On the second occassion, a piece of a hankerchief was caught in the drain pump. This pump has a "propeller" that pulls the water out of the washing machine and pushes it out to the external drain hose. I took it off the drain pump motor and tried to clean it. The original pump is solid and you can't take it apart to clean it. I did the best I could, then put it back on. It made a loud noise when draining. Whirlpool no longer sales just the drain pump, you have to buy a complete new pump and motor combo. It costs about $70 on e-bay (new). It is fairly easy to install (30 min). The good thing about the new pump is that you can take the cover of the pump off without taking the pump motor off. The third time I took the pumpef cover off and found a penny lodged in the pump. After taking it out, the machine ran well.

Note 1: A good way to drain your washing machine is to take a hose pipe and put it in the top of the machine and then use a manual air mattress pump (in reverse mode) on the opposite end of the hose that you put outside. After several pumps on the air mattress pump sucking the water through the hose, you will create a suction that will keep flowing until much of the water is out of your tub. Be ready with several containers to catch the rest of the water when you take the hoses off the pump.

Note 2: Check pockets well to keep things from getting into the drain system. Use a delicate wash bag (a mesh bag) to wash undergarmets, hose, hankerchiefs, and other thin items that might get sucked into the drain system.

Kenmore Washing Machine-front loader

There is a small gap between the metal basket and the plastic tub. Small items - especially small socks and silky clothing can slip through to reach the pump. Wash these items in a mesh laundry bag.

This is a "normal" characteristic of all front load machines. Only a Maytag Neptune positively addresses this issue. They have a long, thin, fine brush between the basket and tub which consistently prevents this issue in their machines.
