Gateway 500x Power Problem

I Have a Gateway desktop that all of a sudden turned itself off yesterday while I was in the middle of a CnC game. I turned it back on and started it in safe mode just in case. It worked, until I decided to restart the computer. Bad decision. Now the operating system or cmos bios won't even start. The monitor just blinks like it wants to start then says going to sleep over and over again. Meanwhile, the computer itself acts like it is trying to start but restarting over and over. The front power light is on and green. The cd and dvd lights flash through the cycle. But, no start up. FYI: I recently had two blown fuses in my house and the power went out while I was on the computer in the middle of something. This happened the day before this stuff. Could that have done something? Please help. Thanks.

First Thing I would suggest doing is to have an Electrician come and check out the Circuit(s) in your housr that were blowing fuses. As this is likely due to power surges and/or short circuits, and thats likely to be a fire hazzard. Not to mention that it could just as easily damage any repairs you make to your PC.

After you know your electrical lines are OK then we can start on your PC.
There are several components in your PC that are easily damaged by power surges. I will list them in order of their likelyhood to have been damaged, any one or even all of them MAY have been damaged.

Power Supply Unit
Motherboard
CPU (Processor)
Video Card
Ram modules

You could try replacing them one at a time Until you finally get the right ones replaced, but it might be more cost effective to take it to a certified repair facility for Gateway (Best Buy, and Circuit City are both good choices in the US)

I would have them give you an estimate before they do any repairs because if many or ALL of these components were damaged, it might be cheaper to buy a new PC.

Hope this helps
Dave

The switch mode power supply in the desktop computer has failed. Most likely the capacitors in the power has exploded.
You need to open the desktop computer and remove the old power supply and replace it with a new one. Take the old power supply with you to your friendly computer shop and get a replacement power supply with the same wattage or greater wattage.

Try connecting a different power supply to it. If the same situation repeats, then it's an internal (motherboard) problem. If the problems go away, then the power supply needs to be replaced.

6 years... I'm surprised the PSU even lasted that long! The power supply is the cheapest part of the PC and usually one of the first parts to fail. Don't worry, a replacement power supply is not too expensive. Good luck!

Gateway 3310s desk top computer power supply

Hello,

You can replace the pc with the same watt power supply or upgrade to around 420W and still be able to run your system within thermal threshold. The power supply should be a 20-pin ATX power supply.

Good Luck

Power supply for gateway

This power supply has an odd form factor so just "any" power supply won't work.
