Epson v100 - stuck carriage

Scanner was working perfectly fine this morning. Now, scanner is obviously stuck and a "clacking" noise is heard as it tries to slide. Won't budge...tech support was no help and they wanted me to buy another scanner or get this one repaired. Just past the warranty of course.
no way, that i can see, of getting unit open so nothing could have gotten in there.
