I have a EX1 Hi8 too and I have had the same problem. This camera is very old and it has a lot of capacitors inside that are leaking and drying out. They need to be replaced. This is a huge and difficult job and it makes no sense to repair. I did it anyway.

What about it ? Do you have one for sale, do you wish to purchase one, or are you just confirming its existence ? If either of the first two, I should try Ebay - if the last, then thank you for the information.

HI8 EX1 capacitors problem, is a repair a good solution?

capacitors are unexpensive, can be obtained in almost any electronics store or even pulled out from any other piece of electronics, if it matches the specs of yours; you need to have the specs for the original capacitor
To have it replaced, the repairman has to be skilled and careful while removing the soldering of the older one and most careful installing the replacement
I have had capacitors replaced in mother boards and if done with care, they back to working status
total cost of repair is low

I HAVE a sharp viewcam vl-h860 hi8

If you're pretty sure the camera is just dead and have already resigned yourself to buying a new one you could just pry the door off and get your wedding tape out. There are lots of places that can transfer it to VHS or DVD for a small fee. On another note, I have a camera just like it, have lost the AV cable and can't seem to find a replacement online. Care to sell me yours? If so send me an email at turnerts@charter.net. Thanks!

8mm/Hi8/Digital 8

As this was quite some time ago, you probably already have your solution, but I just ran across this. Just in case you can use any other 8mm camcorder or deck if you can find one. Also if you still had it I would like to buy the Instruction manual from that old Canon ES780. Please write me back at bpgray@verizon.net if you have it. Thanks.

Problems with playback of HI8 tapes...

What's happening is that the tape in the cassette is being chewed on one side by the camera's tape transporting mechanism during playback, hence the distorted image and sound. The mechanism might be damaged (misalignment) or just dirty. Try not to play other tapes on this unit because they will become permanently damaged. The best way is to find another camcorder (if cleaning does not help). Note that some old cassettes of long recording time will exhibit this behavior more often because of thinner tape used.

LINES DURING PLAYBACK

Fast forward and rewind a cassette several times without using A/C, to drain the battery. Recharge the battery; and you may have found your solution. If that does not work, replace the battery- online auction sites have them for about 10 bucks. If that does not work, start saving your pennies- the prices have come down so much on these things that you can get a high quality Samsung that will everything but outperform your existing camcorder- for $135 USD. Good Luck
