Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

My Maxtor 250GB external hard drive has suddenly stopped working. There does not seem to be any power going to the unit. I have tried changing the fuse, using different power sockets etc but no joy. It was working fine on Friday night. I removed the USB from my Macbook over the weekend and then it was dead this morning

If your drive is under warranty then take it to the service centre, or if its not then remove the casing , take out the hard disk , then put it on a new casing

Maxtor External drive is "clicking"

No, the defect is in the actual hard disk inside your unit - it's the clicking of death.
There is nothing left to do, the unit is unfixable. Just get a new one.

My Maxtor one touch external hard drive will not switch on

HI,
The maxtor one touch hardrives generally have a 3 year warranty on them. If you have the orginal invoice for the same, I would suggest you to call maxtor and they can help you out on the same. The support information is available on the site below

Best of luck

External Hardisk Maxtor 4 One Touch not detected

Have you tried different USB cables with the drive? If the drive is self powered (no ext power supply) which I think that one is, then it needs a really good cable to draw the 5 volts from the USB port. If you have tried a known working cable, then it could be the USB controller or the disk itself. You can buy the USB box on eBay really cheap and move the drive over.

Maxtor one touch 4 mini makes chirping sounds while trying to link up with the computer , does this for aprox a minute then stops , the conmputer dosnt see the drive.

Usualy this thing happens with my WD Elements drive when the cable is not connected properly or some dust went on the connector, try using a paintbrush and get rid of the dust, sometimes the usb cable's end is corrodated and that's why id doesn't work properly anymore, sometimes it connects and a bit later suddenly it dissapears, this case try another cable. And also a good idea to try out the drive on a different USB port.
If none of these works, try it on a different computer and see what happens there, if it's not working over there with any of these tricks than it's time to bring it back to the shop and use your warranty to get a new one.

you may not need one.. onless your os is 98... do you get an error when you try to connect it?. is it asking you for a device driver??.. if you're using win xp or vista.. connecting an externa hard drive is pretty much the same as connecting a flash/thumb drive.. you just plug it in to an unused usb port and off you go.

Go to the MAXTOR web site and download their free diagnostic utility. Then, remove the hard drive from the external case and connect it to a spare connector internally inside your desktop. Run the diagnostic utility and it will tell you if the drive is still OK (it probably is). If so, you will only need to replace the interface card in your external drive.

It sounds like your external hard drive went belly up unfortunately. Unless you backed up your files to another location (remember, backing up means having your files on 2 or more locations, not just "keeping them" on an external drive).
