Question about Compaq Presario Notebook

1 Answer

Malware/spyware My laptop seems to be infected with spyware, malware and whatever else. It boots up very slowly and I get popups from AntiSpyware2009 regularly to clean up spyware and I have trouble getting into some sites because of a message from Antispyware sayng it is an unsecure site. I would like to re-initialize the C drive, reload Windows XP software and start all over again. I never did get disks to do this, but in my packet it has a card entitled "Restore Your System Without Discs" and instructions on doing system recovery. I tried this and it says, can not do recovery because nothing has changed. When I find one that works, it does not get rid of the popups so I think the only way to really get rid of everything else is to start completely over, but how do I do that?

yes, a fresh install is what I would like to do. Ideally I would like to not even have all the other stuff that comes preloaded with the laptop, Will the fresh install get rid of all those?

  • jsturge2 Nov 03, 2008

thanks. a re-install is exactly what I'd like . I assume then that all the other stuff that came preloaded on the PC will be gone too; of which that is ok!

on the hp website for recovery it says

Create a set of recovery discs or a recovery DVD
Creating a recovery disc set If your computer can open to the Windows desktop, you can find out if the computer has Recovery Creator software installed.

    1. Click Start , All Programs , System Recovery and then click PC Recovery Disc Creator .

    2. To create the recovery disc set, open the software and follow the on-screen directions

If I do this and then recover with it, will this accomplish what I need?

It did come with XP preloaded and pre-installed software. I think it does have a D partiton.

Hi!sometimes the best way to get rid of all virus/malware is to do a a fresh install of the operating system, for that :

  1. do copy all important data on ur compu especially on the desktop and the my documents as they will be lost, also all purchased software will be lost
  2. u will need the installation cd of xp and the drivers cd of your laptop..u may get the drivers cd from the hp website at hp.com (do check) so the important thing is to have the windows xp cd..
if u have more questions in actually performing the re installation please let me know..regards!

i am afraid making a recovery disc will not help now as it will also copy the current configuration of the compu along with all the malware etc

did ur laptop come with the Xp pre installed?because if it did then u might be able to get it to factory setting..does it have a D partiton saying HP recovery or something like that?

My PC is showing updater.exe problem while everytime it boots

A process named update.exe appears to be part of several different programs. So many malware named itself update.exe.

***Any malware can be named anything - so you should check where the files of the running processes are located on your disk. If a "non-Microsoft" .exe file is located in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folder, then there is a high risk for a virus, spyware, trojan or worm infection! Check it out!

I think you should run Anti malware software to scan your system.......

When I boot up my lptop, it is taking forever to load. Also when I log on to Internet explorer, it often times takes several minutes to load a page. Can you help me with this? Is there a start-up...

What you have is a big-time clue that your system has been infected by a virus/Trojan horse
Rootkit/Spyware/Worm/Malware of some type.
The first step in tuning up a computer is ridding it of all Malware/Spyware Infection(s). The last
time someone asked me to tune up a computer like yours, my first Malware scan of the
system located 212 viruses.

Free Anti-virus software: www.download.com

Pick (a) Avast! or (b) AVG free anti-virus, and start your tune-up with a deep system scan.

Hi, i've got a dell inspiron 1564 that can't remember the date and time, and boots slowly. is this a cmos battery issue?

It doesn't seem a CMOS battery issue, when this battery fails you'll lose CMOS settings and you wil see a warning about it when computer starts, the slow boot up can be caused by some virus, malware, spyware, etc in your operating system, but also it can be that you have too many applications loading when your operating system starts, with a good antivirus and PC utility (tuning up) software you can solve this.

It powers on and boots up,then after 5 to 10 minutes of using it shuts off

Hello sir, hi automatic shutdown can be cause by several factors, but the common ones are the ff:
  1. aaw7boot infection, check your drive c if this file is present. this needs to be removed. If found this can be deleted on safemode, if the infection is deep, install an anti spyware or anti malware program.
  2. infected by a malware, scan your PC with an anti malware software, you can get one free on download.cnet.com
  3. power supply problems, this should be checked by a qualifies technician,
  4. Battery problem, replace it with a new one.
  5. Systemboard problem, buy a new laptop.
let me know your progress.

Hi! i have a acer aspire one, everytime i switch my laptop on it pops up with a privacy center and i cant get rid of it?

Privacy Center, or PrivacyCenter, is a rogue anti-spyware program designed to trick users into purchasing its full rogue version. Privacy Center looks similar to Privacy Components. Privacy Center may infect your computer through a Trojan, spam emails or it may have come bundled with another malicious program. Privacy Center sells itself as an effective spyware remover tool, however, all it does is make you believe you're infected with numerous spyware threats to offer its "licensed" program.

Go to the link below and download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware program. When it installs it will ask to update and run, please do both. Once it updates, run the program and perfrom a QUICK scan only. When it is through scanning it will ask you to click on the show results button. When you do that it will show you the infections it has found, make sure they are all selected and delete them. You should be malware free now.

Reformatting Hard Drive

If you harddrive is not working then you can't even reinstall the os. Enter the bios (delete key when booting) and see if you see the harddrive. If it's a Gateway then you should have a restore cd or something to restore the os like it was the day you bought it. Don't format the harddrive if the restore files are on the restore partition.

Keep getting this message when i turn on my laptop

This sounds like a Spyware / Malware infection to me

you need to download a spyware/malware scanner/removal tool, which should fix this.

IMHO i use "spybot search and destroy" available from http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html
which has solved/protected me online for some time now

I hope this helps
