Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console
This is the symptoms of a worn laser. Doesn't matter which way the console is stored, the laser will wear out all the same. It takes more effore to read the Security Sector on a game than it does to read a DVD-Video, which is why movies still work. Get the laser replaced and you should be fine. You can eliminate laser wear by installing your commonly played games to HDD.

Are you sure that in the system settings the xbox is set to Load game instead of boot to dashboard? This will be located on the blade on the far right of the dashboard. If no help, try this: First, a stupid step - Make sure a compatible game disc is in the xbox, and turn it off. If it continues to boot to dashboard upon powering up, you could always try removing the system updates by: 1. Turn the console off 2. Press and hold the small sync button on the front of the console (the one you use to connect new controllers) 3. Turn on the console whilst still holding the sync button 4. By the time it has booted to the dashboard, the updates should be cleared. As the first version of the dashboard did not have the option to boot to dashboard by default, game discs should start normally now. If this is the case, feel free to re-download the updates from xbox live. Hope this helps!

SOURCE: x-box 360 won't read discs
sounds like the reader lens has burnt out on it .is your xbox stood upright ? seem to hear the lenses burn out alot faster if the consol is upright as opposed to being led down, you can buy the parts from ebay or other computer shops , or send it back to microsoft to repair , you are able to lay downloaded games as they play off of the hard drive memory , where as the disc games obviously read off of the disc when the laser gets tired they work intermitantly then eventually stop all together.
hope this is of help to you
