Question about Keytec Sony Multiscan E500 21 in. CRT Monitor

1 Answer

CRT monitor too bright

I have just been given a Sony Multiscan E500 monitor. It is working normally except that the brightness is very high, for example even setting the contrast to 100% and brightess to 0% black still appears grey. I am fairly competent with electronics and I have opened and worked on CRT monitors before. I just need some pointers as to what to adjust, ect. Thanks in advance.

I have/had same problem. I have ATI Radeon display adapter and in driver settings there was adjustment for brightness. I adjusted that to minimum and now the brightness is pretty good (still little bit too bright, monitor setting 0%). Other succestions welcome...

Brightness Problem

Hi,

Since focus adjustment using the flyback rear controls (EHT) has no effect, then it could possible mean two things:
  • the EHT is defective (most likely) at least the controls; or
  • the picture tube is already weak.
A workaround is to replace the filter capacitor of the ~70V leading to the collector voltage of the 3 color drive transistor. Normally used to replace with is 100uF/160V.

Of course best would be to have the EHT checked/replaced.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Monitor display becomes very bright

Sounds like a dry joint or a dirty control.
In either case, its probably a case off job.. You need to consider this carefully as you are dealing with potentially voltages up to 30,000V. In all honesty, you may be better off going to your local Thrift Storel where they often have screens for under $10.
Before you take the screen apart, look on the back for a couple of holes close together with one marked FOCUS. The other MAY be marked Brightness or SCREEN.
with a longish NON METALIC screwdriver, turn the recessed control gently in the SCREEN hole slightly one way, then the other and then back to its original position. This may remove any dirt/dust accumilation.
I CANNOT STRESS enough, the need for EXTREAM care here due to the VERY HIGH Voltages involved.
Usual disclaimers apply..
Best take it to a shop or replace it..

Bright, thin line, in the middle of the screen, then...

1. I turn on the monitor, I hear a 'cracklin' sound
Reply: In a CRT Monitor there is a component called EHT which generates High voltage which is connected to the anode of the CRT, If there is any leakage due to moisture can cause this crackiling sound, You need to clean this high tension wire or replace the EHT ( CAUTION : BE AWARE OF HIGH VOLTAGES )

2. The screen only shows a bright, thin line.
Reply: The vertical Drive section of the monitor is faulty.

Black color displayed as green

If the owner's manual covers it, I would do a factory reset on it. I would also test the PC and video card by trying another monitor to be sure. I would check the pins for ones which are bent or broken, and check the cable for pinched spots. After that, I would say the monitor has a bad signal / video board in it.
