The DVD RW (F:) Drive in my Asus notebook doesn't work. Won't read or burn discs.

Thanks man but it's not that. That's the first thing I tried. It's defintely the hardwar. The drive is there when I boot it up and then sometimes it disappears all together after an hour or so. Then, even when it is there, I can't use except to read "offical" discs (ie. Real Audio Albums, DVDs etc). It doesn't let me burn cds or anything like that!

I need to know if my DVD Drive can burn dual layer Discs. The Discs are DVD+R DL and my dvd drive is an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7200A ATA. Thanks

Hi anternidrumm,

According to the site below, the drive can burn dual layers discs:

"The 20x DVD multi writer opens up new dimensions for flexible read and write functions. This high-performance DVD/CD-burner is able to read your DVDs at a speed of 16x and CDs at 48x. It also brings fascinating dynamics into play when writing your blank disks. Now it can even write DVD-R DL two layer media at 12x, while reaching a speed of up to 20x for DVD+R and DVD-R. DVD+R9 and DVD+RWs are processed at 8x and DVD-RWs at 6x. And DVD-RAM can be recorded with up to 12x DVD speed. So how fast can it burn my CDs, you might ask? Even here, with speeds of 48x (CD-R) and 32x (CD-RW), it’s at the top of its class."

this is common probs for notebook dvdrws

they lack quality (all brands)

after sometime drives stops writing dvds, then reading them

and if it is in warranty

go for rma

CD/DVD problem

It might be that the DVD's you are using are damaged / scratched or of the wrong format. Some DVD- burners won't take DVD+ dvd's for example.

By mistake I bought a dvd rw disc instead of dvd-rw disc and recorded a holiday video on my camcorder with it. I usually then upload the contents of the dvd onto my hard drive (Pioneer) and then download...

Try uploading to your PC then converting it to AVI this keeps quality of video. Then if you want to download to a disk use Nero to convert it to VOB (DVD format) and burn off. You can also use Nero to erase the disk. (Nero 7 or more recent preferably.) You must also be sure you PC DVD read write head can take the DVD +/- RW. CHeck compatability.

DVD - RW WONT WORK -

Unfortunately optical drives do have a short life span, you can buy a replacement from newegg.com so cheaply these days its not worth messing with the old one.
I have just bought a DVD-RW dual layer OEM (so I had the burning software with it) for a new build I am doing for $28 plus delivery.
