Question about RCA Projection Televisions

3 Answers

My projection TV 52" model #P52830BL will not turn on. When I plug it in I hear an electonic chirping sound about once per second. It sounds like a computr disc drive going out. I was told it was a color wheel. When I opened it up I do not see a color wheel.

If the TV does not turn on and there is high pitched noise then it is usually not the color wheel.

Even if that is uncommon , you can also get high pitched noise coming from the color wheel, but in that case the color wheel must be running.

In your case The TV stays in stand by, therefore the wheel must not be running.

Most likely, any transformer inside a TV, even a lowly ferrite bead, can produce an high pitched whining noise.
This happens because the oscillator circuits start creating the noise aftesr some component fail.

This looks like a typical case.

Parts that can be involved are:
Power adapter.
Lamp high voltage power board (ballast even if this is not a traditional ballast but just a small pcb).

Inspecting the boards to understand where the noise comes from requires working with live power on a device with high voltage circuits and high voltage capacitors.

Due to the number of hazards involved, this job should be done by a qualified technician.

If you decide to call a technician you can use the phone number listed on the user manual.

Hi chastaia

WARNING: there are lethal voltages in the set,and may also still be present in the power supply after the set has been shut down.

The chirping sound you hear is the power supply attempting to start up, but there is a fault condition present in the set that is preventing it from doing so. It may even be components within the power supply circuitry itself that have failed. Do you have any experience with working on pulse width modulated power supplies. They are somewhat complicated for the layman to repair, however in saying that, the most common cause of a power supply not starting is failing electrolytic capacitors. rebuilding the supply would entail replacing most all of these components. Without actually having a repairman diagnose the problem in the set, it would be very difficult to say if the power supply was causing the problem, or reacting to a problem somewhere else.

Best approach to sorting out the problem, would be to get a quote from a Tech, and if the power supply was determined to be the problem, AND you were up for it, attempt to rebuild the supply yourself, or purchase a replacement board assembly. Other than that, I would proceed with caution doing anything to the set without getting a qualified opinion first

regards
robotek

The deflection board needs replacement. The chirping is indicating the deflection circuit has an issue. You can get a replacement deflection board from www.tvrepairworld.com which includes instructions on how to remove and replace the board.

chirping sound is a short of some kind, could be the flyack or horizontal output, could also be a bad picture tube or power supply capacitors, you really need a tv repairman to troubleshoot this.

My 52 in

Chirping is usually a problem in 2 areas of this unit. 1st check 3 legged regultor on the right side of the chassis, also 2 small transisters and 2 resisters near and in front of the regulator. RCA has a kit for this problem, the second is check the horizontal output transister is on a separate heat sink along side of the Flyback Transformer, it shorts and pulls down the regulator power supply.

RCA P52830BL picture is bowed and colors separated.

There is a convergence printed circuit board that likely has a few bad components. If you decide to get it repaired, the technican will probably check for fluid leaks from the picture tubes coolant area which has given problems on this model also. If the picture quality leaves a bit to be desired, it may be a wise move to upgrade to HDTV. A Sony KDS-55A20 model has a great picture and should be less than $2300. I just saw one at a local Sams Club store.
