Follow the red battery cable(positive)and it should take you to the back of the starter motor. While someone is turning key to crank you can hit the outer case of the starter with the appropriate tool as this can loosen up a jammed starter.

NO START 1999 CAVALIER

If the click you hear is from the starter solenoid mounted on the starter, it could either be a bad starter or poor connections between battery and starter. Raise the hood and listen closely near the starter for the click, when someone turns the key to crank. If the click is from the starter solenoid, have starter tested or replaced. If click is from a relay under the hood, then the start circuit will have to be further diagnosed.

the clicking that you hear is coming from the starter relay. sounds like your ignition starter switch or ignition lock cylinder is bad.

I need to know the location of the neutral safety switch

Below are 2 pictures for you. Both are pretty much in the same spot it just depends on if you have a 3 or 4 speed transmission. Now I'm not sure of the "clicking" sound that you are talking about but I just want to mention that you do have a starter relay. You may be hearing that "Click" but your starter could be bad. Even your starter could be making the "clicking" noise. I say this because it sounds like failure in that area and not the neutral safety switch. If that were bad you would hear nothing as if you were trying to start it when it was in gear...you hear nothing. A quick test you can is to have someone turn the key to try and start the engine. While they are doing that put your finger on the starter relay (see picture below of location). if you feel it engauge or "click" that means you're getting power to the starting system and it's not your neutral safety switch. You could go one step farther and if the relay is clicking go down to the starter. Again while someone turns the key to start using a test light check to see if you are geting power to one of the smaller wires (not sure of the color but it will be on the solenoid) and if you are geting power while the key is turned and trying to start buy no power when they let off the key then you most likely have a bad starter. Or a wiring problem. I just wanted to mention this so you are just not changing parts for nothing. Hope this helps...

Battery good won't turn over

Its probably a starter or starter relay. try tapping lightly on the side of the starter as someone turns the key. if it starts its the starter. if you dont hear a click when turning the key its probably a starter relay. just in case though, if you havent already, check the fuses.

04 expedition wont start fuse box just clicks all power goes out. just replaced the battery

check the voltage on the battery ,, it should read a minimum of 12.4 volts, Ive bought batteries before that had lost some charge , if it has the right voltage,, tap on the relay you hear clicking (you'll need help , someone to try turning it over) make sure all connections are clean,, if that doesn't work, your going to have to have the starter checked

1990 plymouth acclaim wont start. you hear a clicking sound. put in a new battery, had the starter tested .starter was good but when you turn the key, you just hear a clicking that dosent sound like its...

Hi, what you hear is probably the starter relay which may have burned it's contacts. See if you can find it and swap it with a similar one. If the relay is good, the problem is the brown wire from the relay to the starter solenoid. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

Changed my battery, car won't turn over makes a click, that's it .could a fuse be blown or is it more serious.

Was the battery dead? check the battery voltage with a load, headlights ect, if its below 12 volts, the battery may be bad. also check the connections at the battery. if the battery is good, then you may have a bad starter. sometimes you can get it to crank if someone holds the key in the start position while you tap on the starter with a hammer.

Truck wont turn over hear a clicking sound

Assuming your battery is fully charged it sounds like a starter.

The click you are hearing is the solenoid switch on the starter (basically a relay). Turn the key on and off a few times while someone give the starter a good few wackes with a piece of wood or other hard object. When it starts to crank over hold the key in the start position until it starts....then drive to the parts store and buy a new starter.

Cheers,

Volvo 2.0 S40cd 1996 . Battery not flat but won't start , ignition lights flashing , engine won't turn over . Lights ok and central locking ok . tried to jump start from another vehicle but no effect .

hi, the problem you are having sounds like the starter motor has packed up if when you turn the key you get nothing or you might even hear a faint click, if you open the bonnet then get someone to turn the key you might hear a faint click coming from the starter motor. This click indicates the starter motor needs replacing.

you could try hitting the starter motor with a hammer give it a few good hard hits this might get the starter motor working for a while if not then it needs replacing at once if it works then this isnt a permanent fix so be warned.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

When I turn the ignition, the dashboard lights up but the car will not start (the motor does not sound to be turning over)

hi, if when you turn the key nothing happens or you just hear a faint clicking sound then this indicates that the starter motor needs replacing.

If you open the bonnet and get someone to turn the key to start the car you might hear a clicking sound coming from the starter motor if you hear this then this indicates the starter motor needs replacing, if on the other hand you hear nothing at all then you need to check all the wires going to the starter.
Also check the earth wires coming from the battery check they are all connected where they earth out on the body of the car and where it connects to the engine.

You could also try giving the starter motor a few hard hits with a hammer this usually gets it working for a few times.
Also if you car is manual gear box then put it in say 2nd gear then get someone to push the car slightly so that you are turning the engine that way then try starting using the key this also sometimes get the starter working be be warned this isnt permanent fix so get the starter changed sooner rather than later ok

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok
