Fault with Samsung PS42S5H

The bottom half of the screen keeps turning black. It started flicking just occasionally but now happens more frequently and sometimes stays black even if I swithch the TV off and back on again.

I have the same problem with my Samsung PS42S5H. The bottom of the screen goes black, but comes back by tapping the screen. I've spoken to a Samsung service centre who told me there are two separate circuits that control the top and bottom of the picture. That at least narrows it down. It could be a dry joint or it could be a problem with the chip in that circuit. Either way it's fixable and the unit is not terminally ill.

50 inch samsung plasma that is 3 years old occassionally gets a black bar across top half of the screen. is this tv done?

not necessarily, sometimes the connectors that feed the screen get old and dirty

If you have some electronic skills, open the TV and clean the connectors around where you see the symptoms and you may have a good chance to get if fix by doing that...
good luck

Top half of screen turns black

This is a problem I've seen many times with this set, the upper scan board is failing. You need it repaired, it could damage another component when it fails completely.

Black bar running from top to bottom in the screen.

There are horizontal and vertical relays in plazmas that go out over time and cause this to happen , You can get an estimate from a local tv repair service in some cases they can give it to you over the phone. Good luck.

Samsung PS42S5H Plasma Screen

This can be caused by two things, a bad address board (low $) or a bad plasma panel (high $). The only way to tell which it is, is to replace the corresponding address board and see if it fixes it. Hope this helps.
