Computer has 512 RAM installed and will take 2 altogether.
Can I put in a 1G stick and a 512? I am unsure how many slots it has.
The alternative would be to take out the 512 and put in 2 1G sticks.
Please advise what I should buy to upgrade to max out the memory.

Yes you can use a 1gb stick with a 512 but if the comp is yours from new it most likely will have two sticks by 128 in it now, so you will have to check before you go any further and if it has and you were thinking of buying a 1gb, then you will still only have 1024 + 128 = 1152 ram the other thing is to make sure the ram is the same or it can cause computer lock ups.
that model has uses 2gb max so two sticks of 1gb would be the max to use.
hope this helps.

Crucial's website says your computer will hold up to 2GB max. There are 2 slots. Also says you can mix sizes.

Here is their link for additional info.

You can also do a scan on the site and they will make reccommendations for you.

Information about how to expand RAM in Acer Aspire 1403LC

Most RAM will work with each other, but the safest way to be sure is by checking the speed. On the stick that is in there now you should see a label that says something like PC2100 DDR. I looked up the specs of your computer and this RAM should work for it.

I have 512 mg of memory. Would there be a big difference if I add a 1 gb stick and keep the 512 mb , as oppose to removing the 512 mb and replace with two 1 gb sticks?

The performance of your laptop will improve if similar memory is placed in each of memory slot.If 1gb memory and 512mb memory are placed in available slot you will only get the performance of a single 1gb memory.but two 1gb memory are used performance will be similar to a 2gb ram or more.

Upgrade from 512MB to 1GB

The specs on the memory are correct, so you purchased the correct type of memory for this motherboard. If your getting no video when you power on with the 1gb stick, I would be willing to bet the 1gb stick is bad. Can you return it and try another stick?

Hi !
if u wanna upgrade RAM ,ur RAM should be of same capacity in both slot. i mean to say if u wanna use 1 GB....then put 512 & 512 or else put single 1 GB. But u cant use 512 in one slot & 1 GB in another slot at a time. if u do the combination like that ,it will never work.

RAM ON acer computers

Yes... just need to purchase the right stuff.

You need to determine if you have DDR or DDRII. And then determine if you have one stick of 512, or if you have 2 sticks of 256. Once you know this information, visit your local Best Buy or purchase somewhere online, a memory upgrade. Such as 2 sticks at 512mb for 1 gig total. Assuming you have two memory slots, should have anyway.

DDRII is fairly cheap right now, be a good time to upgrade. DDR on the other hand, is still a little more expensive.
