Not all PS3s are able to play PS2 games - they started removing that functionality when they came out with the 60GB model. So if you have a relatively new PS3 (A year old or so), that's likely the reason.
if it will still read ps2 cds dvds and ps1 games then your blu laser just burnt out this is a common problem. if you are under warrenty still send it back if not you can pay sony $200 to fix it or loose your warrenty and spend $80 and 10 min of your time to fix it. message back if you wnat to know more and how to fix yourself
The pal ps2 games and dvds will not play on a Japanese ps3 due to region coding. You can play all ps3 games and blu ray films because they do not use region coding. Some games will also play differently on a ps3, for example, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (I highly recommend the game) will not have any blood on a Japanese ps3. The region coding feature can not be changed/modified. I would recommend returning Japanese ps3 and purchasing a European model instead if that is possible. Bon chance.
Your best bet on getting this fixed is to go to Gamestop store and get a DVD cleaning disc kit. This in many cases will work to clean the lens of the laser without opening the PS3 and voiding the warranty. Follow the instructions on the kit in detail to get best results.
