I'm not sure that 99% is accurate. On the right side of the unit, if you are looking in the same direction as the unit is projecting, there are two cooling fans. There is one on the left side. If one of those fans is not functioning, the unit can have the same symptom. There can also be other reasons besides the bulb. Best to send it in for repair.

I'm having the same issue currently. I was able to get a hold of the Cinego Tech at Radioshack in Texas. He said 99% of the time it is the bulb. I'm currently looking for a replacment.

would need a model number to get this nailed down but it sound like you have a DLP projector, this might have a color wheel in it, sometimes when this fails you get flash of colors as the color wheel slows down then the unit sences that the color wheel has stoped and shuts down the unit

Lamp not working

I had the same questions and decided to push power on and hold the help button as soon as soon as the power light came on. 10 secs later and the light was working again! Try grabbing a different NEC projector's remote, maybe it will have a help button.
