Screen does not come on

Sometimes when I turn on my laptop, the screen does not come on. I have to hold down the start button to shut it off and then restart it. It used to be infrequent, but now it happens nearly every day. What is this? Am I doing something wrong? What is this doing to my computer? Then when it starts up properly I will get pop ups saying that certain programs have stopped working, it is searching for a solution and will notify me when one is found. What is going on here? My laptop is just over a year old. Thank you to anyone who can give me some insights....Gloria
