I need the security key for my ZyXel E72 in order to setup my new laptop for home use

  1. Look through the manual for your particular model of router. Contained within should be the IP (Internet protocol) address for your router. Input this address into your Internet browser to access your router's security settings. The address will typically be something like 192.168.1.1

  2. Enter the default user name and password for the router, which should also be in the instruction manual. If you have lost the manual, you can often obtain an electronic copy online at the manufacturer's website. Most default router passwords are something along the lines of "username: admin," "password: admin." Thus, try inputting "admin" as both the username and the password if you are having trouble locating your manual.

  3. Navigate to the "wireless security" option from the Options menu that will appear in your Internet browser. There you will find the network security code listed under the WEP settings. Write the code down and keep it in a safe place. You can change the code every month if you feel it necessary to prevent people from attaining access to your network through sheer luck and persistence. Default settings are:

  4. IP adddress: 192.168.1.1

  5. Username : admin

  6. password: 1234

New computer; can't find original installation disk

You should not need an installation disc.

Connect your PC to the router with a network cable and type 192.168.1.1 into the browser adddress bar. This will connect you to the router setup and maintenance screen, from where you can configure the router. If necessary you can reset it to factory settings and enter a new password.

You can then disconnect your cable and use it wirelessly.

Internet problems

try resetting your modem, not the router. Unplug it, wait a bit and plug it back in. the modem needs to see the routers ip address so it allows connectivity. Right now the modem has your computers ip address and doesn't see the router, until you reset it. try it, it should work.

What is and how do I get an IP address to hook up a router?

If you connect the computer directly to the modem, does it work?
If that works then the modem is working.
Now connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
You will need to open the set up page of the router to check the settings of the router.
You can set up the router without the CD also.
It is very easy.

I am trying to setup smc2804wbrp-g i did everything and i try to do the the ipconfig and it gives me the proper ip adddress and everything but i am not getting the internet connection

Are you getting the ip address by DHCP? If everything is working on the router side, open the command prompt and try to ping , for example, www.google.com, if you do not get a response, then you are not getting out to the internet through the modem. Also, try resetting the modem. Some companies modems, such as Comcast, require you to resert the modem by unplugging the modem for 10-15 seconds, then powering it back on. This registers the MAC address for the new device. If this doesn't work, you may need to call the company and tell them what you need to do.

Dell Truemobile 2300 - cannot connect to internet

This is usually a router configuration issue. The router has to be configured to match your new broadband settings.

For example, your old DSL may have required some kind of login which was entered into the router. For most broadband cable connections, you set the router to get an IP address automatically.

Re-run the router Setup Wizard. You can download it here:

Router not hooked up properly

Router setup
If you are using the cd that comes with the router, that is the problem. You do not have to use the cd. Go to the control panel and un-install the program that the cd installed.
then:
Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line.
