I have a DVDRo4 model so they may not be the same. I connect 3 wire RCA cables to the DVDR output and to TV 3wire RCA input. I set the TV chan to Aux. I set the DVDR souce button to disc. Hope this works on you unit 05
Laser is either dirty or starting to wear out.It may also not be a compatible disc, not all brands of discs work in this model. The unit records on R+Rw+ discs 4x speed or slower.Variable speed discs1x-16x will also work.
Most of the time it is just a dirty laser that can read the disc,to clean laser use a commercial laser cleaning disc,Phillips and Maxell work well in this model.Put a drop of rubbing alcohol on cleaning brushes.
Try using Sony +R discs. or +RW's are good, any brand as long as they are +'s. For some reason alot of +R discs brands will not work, I wait and just get Sony +R or the +RW's on sale and stock up and I have no more troubles. Mine is the 05MU. The ZU is a little strange with the RW but will still record. Hope this helps.

Try the red/yellow/white cables. select that SOURCE. first select your recording length. I usually put mine on 3-4 hours and try to keep it from running to the end or you have problems. I use Rewriteable dvds, if you use reg discs be sure to finalize the disc so it will work in other players. I read if you are copying macrovision vhs to use the antenna input and it will copy it with that input. Just tune it to channel 4 or whatever. Forget trying to set the timer to record from tv. I never have success with that.
I have the same problem with rentals. Even discs barely scratched or with fingerprints. The ilo recorder is great for recording but not really a good player. Try watching a disc you recently recorded. If it still messes up maybe it needs cleaning? May be getting too hot too, check your clearance around your unit.
Does the disc still play in other dvd player? My ILO has always been picky to play rentals so I just have a cheap COBY player hooked up to front inputs of my ILO. I use it to watch the dvds, only use the Ilo to record. Saves wear and tear on my ILO but cannot find a universal remote to operate them both and my tv. If it still records okay thats what I would do, just watch the discs in a secondary unit. Sounds like time to start shopping for new recorder.
Have you tried the rewriteables, they don't require to be finalized at all. ILO's are real picky, I returned two to Walmart before discovering to use ONLY SONY + or the rewriteables(brand doesn't seem to matter on the rewritables, don't know why.
These R04 are fickle, some Brands of DVD discs won't work in ILO,try another brand. Also clean laser in iLO it may be dirty, use commercial cleaning disc, put a drop of rubbing alcohol on brushes.Do not use any other chemical.
It is possible you laser is defective or starting to go.If that's the case you need to replace burner/loader.
Some dvd recorders formulate a little differently,I have made recordings in my iLo that won't work in all brands of players/recorders.
your dvd writer is bad you will have to replace it believe me i now what im talking about i have went through 4 ilo's did the same thing plus 100's of differnt name brand dvd's
