Hi from uk not conversant with your vac but if it has only one belt that drives the roller brush ? i would suspect that the actual roller has split in centre remove roller to check it? suggest you renew drive belt to provide extra life if it has not been replaced recently or at all?

How do I change the belt on the 116 model?

To properly fix a belt on a Kenmore vacuum, you will first need to indicate whether this is an upright or a canister vacuum. The model given, 116, is only the first part of the model number, and all Kenmore vacuums, upright and canister style, start with 116. There is a period first, then a whole string of numbers, 116.255553 etc.

Kenmore vacuums are mainly made by Panasonic for Sears, and most will use a Panasonic belt. If the belt is an upright, this makes it simple, and will be a Panasonic "UB" belt.

For a canister vacuum, most models use what's referred to as a cogged belt. This type of belt has little teeth on the inside of the belt, and is Panasonic CB-5 belt.

Instructions on How to Replace the Belt for an Upright;
There will usually be to plastic screws on the top of the agitator housing on the base of the vacuum, that will say belt access. Simply take a flat head screw driver, and turn the screws so that the screw is pointing up and down on both sides. Then pull the plastic agitator housing, or the top of the base of the vacuum off. Inside you will see a the roller brush, and the belt (or broken belt). Simply take the new belt and wrap it around the silver pulley located in the back of the machine, opposite the roller brush, and wrap the other end of the belt through the roller brush. Stretch the roller brush back into the housing of the machine, and replace the top of the base of the vacuum back on the machine. You should give the belt a tug, to ensure that the brush is spinning when the belt is being pulled..

Just purchased a reconditioned model. Makes a ton of noise and the bottom brush doesn't seem to turn like in my old Oreck. Does that indicate it needs a new belt?

Your Dyson does have a belt but its one that cant be replaced it is called a clutch assy. if your roller brush isnt spinning then it could be that you dont have the purple knob on the left hand side if your facing the vacuum to the carpet setting. if you do have it on the carpet setting and its still not spinning then your clutch need to be replaced.
dyson roller brushes donot rotate as fast as Oreck roller brushes. in fact they are rotate at about half the speed. so keep that in mind.

The belt is intact but the aggitator doesn't spin anymore. Had a horrible rubber smell, went to change belt. Not the problem. Anyone know what could be wrong? Dirt Devil bagless w/dirt indicator

Even though your belt is intact it still could be worn. if you tilt the vac up (roller off the floor and the roller spins, replace the belt. on most vacuums the life of the belt for optimum performance should be 9- 12 months. If your vac has a carpet / bare floor selection, check to make sure it is in carpet mode.

My roller do not spin

There is also a circuit protector which trips if something gets caught in the roller, so that might be the problem. There is a very small red button on the right side at the bottom of the vacuum (IT'S VERY TINY), and you just push that in and it will reset the circuit.

open the bottom and you will see where the belt goes.clean off the motor shaft before putting on the new belt .the old belt might have left some rubber on the motor shaft.clean the shaft or your new belt won't last very long

My kenmore beltless upright canister vaccuum doesn't spin anymore

Ensure the agitator is not bound up and can be moved manually by hand in both directions. Clean any string or binding material if you find it. Press the reset button on the top of the chassis. If it clicks, then you should try turning it on and see if the agitator spins. If it doesn't spin, I have had luck giving a sharp kick to the top of the chassis.

New noise when vac is run

mine was allowing the roller/beater bar to hit the cover as it turned take the cover back off and ensure the beater is in the right place then that the cover is locked in the right place then you can spin it by hand (power cord unplugged of course) and make sure it is clearing everything. BTW, the belt has to be stretched to get the beater bar in place like on most vac.s

Beater bar will not turn

if the beater bar wont turn on when you switch it from floors to carpets ( the knob near the bottom of the machine, and on the right side of it when your facing the machine ) then its probably the clutch mechanism that drives the belt, you will need to take it to a vac shop to have it fixed.

Brush roller won't turn

On my Dyson, there is a brush reset button on the top right hand side (if you are looking at the front) that you can press to reset the brush. I was vacuuming and too lazy to move a toy and this worked for me once I freed the rope from the brush.
