    same problem

  • DerekHamlet Feb 01, 2008

I had the same problem. I searched the web endlessly, tried a million things, contacted Creative (what a disappointment), tried the tap tap technique and got more and more depressed.
    I did get it fixed.
Firstly, the tap tap method can only be jiggling something that is not making a good connection, or a stuck drive or something like that.
Getting rid of all things creative, ensuring wmp 10 is loaded and media runtime 11 is not there is important. I tried to do that with no success.
Finally I dragged out an old laptop, wiped its operating system, loaded xp pro, upgraded to wmp 10, loaded the driver, firmware and latest version of creatives software onto the desktop.
    Then I did the following:

I too upgraded my firmware and landed up with just the rescue screen
    Here is what I did
    A) Go to control Panel->add remove programs->Remove all Creative applications and drivers you
    B) Reboot your PC
    C) Download the latest Drivers (Not Firmware) and Install them
d)Reboot and Ensure Your device manager shows Windows Portable Device and does contain Zen Xtra
    e)Download and Install ZENZ_PCAPP_LB_1_40_03_MTP.exe
    f) While Installing - The program will complain that It still cannot see your zen..Keep Clicking OK to retry
g)After the 3rd (OK Clicks) attempt - It proceeds to install the balance of the software
h)Reboot your PC - after the reboot you should notice that ur ZEN shows the USB SYNC is ok- it shows the circular arrow
    I) Run the Firmware Upgrade ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_10_03.exe

    It worked.
The only thing that seemed different than the above was that when the firmware started to load it said it was rebuilding the library. That process seemed to get close to the end, but just did not complete.
After an hour i gave up and closed it. I disconnected the player and believe it or not everything was there, it showed the correct size of drive and all of the libraries were there.
You cannot imagine my relief to have my friend back.
I'm not suggesting that this method or any other method is the correct one.
I am suggesting that you be patient, search lots of different lists and don't give up. If your hard drive can be heard to spin up, it's probably okay.
For some reason Creative's firmware is very very finicky about how it can be inveigled out of rescue mode.
Best of luck to all of you who face the same problem.
I so look forward to the generation of mp3 players that have 120GB flash drives.
oh, yeah, save your pennies and buy a good sized external hard drive to back up all your music.

Some weeks ago I posted a potential solution to the "stuck in rescue mode" problem that can happen with a zen xtra. I did get mine operational gain but there is a problem. I can dump the firmware, reload it and get an operational player but....................... the firmware does not fully load. It says it does, but then gets stuck at the rebuilding library stage and never finishes.
I went so far as getting an old laptop and wiping the system clean. Then I loaded XP and upgraded to media player 10. Then I plugged in the player.
The computer saw it immediately and it went to connected mode. I then disconnected the player and started it in rescue mode, deleted the firmware put it in reload mode and plugged the player back in to the computer.
Again it was recognized. I started firmware program and it started to load to the zen. But, it never completed. After 8 hours I disconnected the player, turned it back on. It will play music, but does not show all the music in the library. It will put music into select mode, but when I go there you do not see what the music selected is.
When I try to load the zen drievers, the computer does not recognize and connect the zen.
    Any ideas????????????
My next attempt will be to completely wipe (sniff) and reformat the hard drive. After that I guess it's a paper weight.
BTW and this is important. Creative no longer supports this product in anyway. Mine was only 2 years old, but they told me they no longer have any parts and do not support technical answers. In short a 2 year old machine is no longer supported by the company. Now that's upsetting.
It may be the new world of business, but for me Creative just fell off the list of companies whose products I will buy. Period.

  • DerekHamlet Mar 22, 2008

This will be my final comment on my mp3 player because everything is now updated and working perfectly. I cannot remember what I did to create the problem but, ended up stuck in rescue mode, only had 20 gb showing on the 60gb drive and much of library simply did not show.
The good news was I had 90% of the music backedup on a separate hard drive.
After two months of unsuccessful attempts at fixing it, the best I ended up with was a machine that could play some music, would not show selected music and could not connect to a computer.
So, I had a paper weight, could pay someone else to try and fix it or......................... reformat everything. I did it.
Then I took a laptop, formatted the hard drive and loaded xp, then upgraded windows media player to version 10.
I loaded the firmware program onto the desktop.
Then I plugged in the zen. It was recognized immediately as a zen and was given a drive number.
Then I started the load firmware file. Interestingly it said this program is the same as the firmware on your device, do you want to load it anyway.
Well, I had deleted the firmware via rescue mode, but I said proceed.
Bingo, it loaded in abohut 30 seconds, then it said "press reset".
It had never done that before. I did and it completed, booted and rebuilt the library. Of course there was no library to rebuild.
Then I took it back to my desktop, connected it and again it was recognized. I took most of the day, but I reloaded 45 gb of music; it took most of the day and of course some of the files were wrong format which hung things up for a bit.
    It completed and everything works.
Now I can go about re-loading redchair etc. and be able to edit stuff.
I cannot stress enough that having a good sized backup drive for music and photos etc. is a desirable thing to have.
As for creative, all I can say is grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr to their customer support. They no longer support any of their devices that use hard drives and their largest flash drive player is 32 gb.
    P. S. After all the stories about people wrecking hard drives by dropping their player, I no longer put it on the desk. When loading files it sits on the floor right next to the usb slot.
I wish y'all well with any and all of your future zen problem solutions

The tapping thing works!  I tried several times, taking the battery out to completely turn it off in between, and finally it worked.  I hit it pretty hard.  I figured, what the heck, what do I have to lose?  Now it's back.

I had dropped it on the floor just before it quit working, so I guess that's probably not good for it.

  • sbockett Oct 06, 2008

I had this same 'rescue mode' problem but didn't have any of the 30 gigs of music backed-up! But, the tapping solution worked the very first time I tried it ... so now I can back all this music up and start updating this thing. Not only did you all save me 300 bucks in buying a new player, but you also saved the time and effort of getting all that music back. Thanks so much!!!!!

I have the exact same problem, help someone?!

  • jennlmcq Dec 29, 2008

Unfreakingbelievable! Mine stopped working this morning while I was walking to work - all I could get to come up was the rescue mode screen. When I plugged it into the computer, it looked as though there was nothing on it, when in fact, I have over 20 GBs of music on it. I thought all was lost, but fighting back the tears, I read this post and thought I'd give it a shot - it worked on the first try! Genius, simply genius! (Err, or maybe it's more along the lines of dumb luck, but either way it DID work.)

Thank you thank you - you just saved me 300.00.

Maybe they just got lucky? I don't know, appliances never work for me, even when they don't need to be repaired. As simple as it sounds, my brother is a firm believer in just turning it off and on again. A lot of times, that actually does work. www.abbeyplumbingcanberra.com.au

This is dangerous because it risks deleting all your songs (I hope you have them backed up somewhere). There is a reset hole on the left side of my machine and I stuck a pin in there and reset the player. That has solved the problem for me at least temporarily. It has been less than a day since I did it.

I followed solution #7 instructions
The only problem was that when firmware upgrade said player was rebooting (it was not) so I reset the Zen with a paper clip.
When it came back up the firmware install finished. I reloaded my songs and everything works great. Thanks to everyone for the great comments and info.

Holly S**t!!! I can't believe the tapping worked! I had to sign up for this website just so I could submit my thanks.

This is my second Zen Xtra. I ended buying a cheap used one on Ebay because my first one started having the headphone jack issue, so I just swapped the hard drive from the first into the used one (the fabled soldering fix didn't work for me). Worked great... for 8 months.

Today, I just plugged it in and the hard drive wouldn't spin up (went to recovery mode). Having dealt with Nomad firmware issues before, I was quickly anticipating the worst. A complete wiping of the hard drive and reloading firmware. Thank God I found this suggestion before I jumped off the deep end. I can't believe it worked.

Posted on Jul 10, 2008

Totally skeptical... but I just decided that I didn't have anything to lose. When it's starting up. It might got to the rescue mode screen. hit reboot. It spun up after I tried that a couple of times!

Good post bro.

Tap above the Menu button when the EAX logo comes up a few times....you'll feel the drive kick in.....seriously.

Comment by DerekHamlet, posted on Feb 01, 2008. After trying many different things before, what Derek said he did worked for me! Thanks Derek. I also tried this on a computer other than my own, I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. Thanks again.

What the HECK! My son's 40GB Nomad Zen Xtra has been toast for probably two years. Whenever I see it I just think of all that dough sitting there wasted. I picked it up off the desk today and because the charger just happened to be sitting next to it, charged the battery, got the "rescue mode" screen, then searched for troubleshooting and got this site. To be brief, I reset, tapped it on the desk at the recommended time and now I sit here listening to my son's crappy music. I guess no the old man has an MP3 player. Now I just have to figure out how to use it. God bless whoever posted solutions and tips to this thread.

Posted on Mar 14, 2008

As if it hasn't been said enough already. Tapping it does work. I had a guy listen to it and he said the hard drive was toast, but not after a few taps, though you do have to tap it at the right time when starting up. I don't know when it was because I had it up to my ear when I got it working. Nice Fix

This just happened to me, literally today - same mp3 player model. It's a bit of a pain but as far as I can tell, that's it up shit creek. I've pulled it apart and had a look about at what's inside, whenever I try to format it says 'disk error' or something similar. So, to be honest, I think that's it broken. Time to find a new model..

hard disk is bad.
can you format?
  1. Detach the Zen player from your PC , and ensure that the Zen Sleek is turned off.
2. Connect the power supply to the player.
3. Hold down the Play/Pause button while inserting a paper clip into the Reset hole
underneath your player, beside the data/power connector. Keep on holding the
Play/Pause button while you release the Reset button. The Rescue Mode screen will
then appear.
4. After the recovery mode has started, release the Play/Pause button

It will display the following options.
Clean Up Scans the player and removes invalid links from its music library.
Does not affect music files themselves.
Format (All) Caution! Erases all content!
Save a copy of your player's content before formatting.
Reload OS/ Firmware Caution! Erases your player's firmware.
DO NOT select the Reload Firmware option unless you have access to a PC and you have downloaded the necessary firmware to install.
