Is your memory full? Does the camera attampt to focus when you push the button down 1/2 way? If not the mode dial may be faulty (you are not in picture taking mode) or the shutter button may be faulty (no focus attempt) Try to use the timer button to get the shutter to trip.
some cameras have a choice in menu as to monitor or continous autofocus-monitor or continous means camera always seeks a focus which hurts bat life but makes focus quicker-single means camera won't focus untill button pressed halfway-make sure you are not in macro mode-flower icon on screen-this will screw up focus except for close up work-good luck-check menu settings for your type of focus
try to manually adjust the zoom. My camera is doing the same thing. sometimes I can get it to focus after forcing the camera to zoom in and out a few times. No one well let me know how to get hold of a repair manual to adjust this, but when I figure it out I will post it.
Actually, try manually turning off the flash and taking a picture. If the shutter works and takes a picture, then suspect that your flash is burned out. Unfortunately it's not a simple task to change a burned out flash tube.
It sounds like your lens's focus element is stuck. Given the events you describe it is possible that a grain of sand has worked its way into the focus motor's gearing and jammed it up. Normally the small motor moves the focus optic in and out to achieve proper focus, if its movement is limited or completely jammed you will experience blurry pictures.
The camera will have to be disassembled and the sand cleaned out to restore normal function. There are repair providers you can find online who can work on your camera.

Digital zoom is in the menu and must be turned on to activate it. When you use the zoom it takes 2 opperations to function. First opperation is to zoom all the way in then the camera should stop. This is the limit of the optical zoom. Then you let off the zoom button, and hit it again and then the digital zoom will start.
Digital zoom is just a gimic if you learn how it works its not doing anything different then you can do in photoshop.
All digital zoom is doing is like cropping.
