Question about ASUS Eee PC 1000H Laptop

1 Answer

OS Lockup I have downloaded avast and I am trying to remove ESET NOD32 Antivirus. My OS keeps locking up and I can't do anything. I have to restart, but the problem continues. I can't get task manager to come up. Just OS lock up.

    UK 904HD (XP)

Same frustration: Charged EEE PC battery, switched on, went through Windows setup (country, timezone etc), hit the exit button on ESET antivirus (no problem) started internet explorer, downloaded and installed AVAST, rebooted, then the fun began!

After reboot the ESET screen came up asking me to 'Activate' or 'Exit'. Choose Exit - machine hangs. Reboot, choose Activate - screen for name and email address comes up, enter details, hit NEXT - machine hangs.

After reboot immediatly hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, kill ESET - machine hangs.

Swear, drink wine, reboot, choose Activate, add details, hit NEXT - machine hangs.

Tomorrow morning: get receipt, return to Tescos, get new machine (and more wine, just in case)....

(Tidy little machine though, quick to boot up (I should know!!), solid construction, great screen.)

    I ONLY THINK I'VE BLOODY FIXED IT, DON'T I?!

Reboot and keep the F5 key held down the whole time. Never let go until you are asked whether you want to start in 'safe' mode. Answer Yes (choose the basic Windows XP option if any options are presented), then choose the Administrator's account if asked.

Go to Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs.

Wait for the list of installed programs to load (you'll feel smug by this stage because the machine hasn't hung yet!), remove the ESET Registration program. Then remove AVAST.

(You won't be able to remove the main ESET program yet.)

Reboot without the F5 key being pressed.

Go into Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs again, remove ESET.

(The uninstall got 'stuck' at '4 seconds remaining' for me but may not for you. I cancelled, uninstalled EEE online storage program, then tried ESET again.)

BINGO! I am asked to reboot, I do that, I hold my breath, machine works a treat! I drink more wine again now.

I go to the recycle bin (I had deleted the AVAST install file), restore the AVAST install file with a quick right-click (I feel like I'm James Bond now, invincible), go back to the Windows Desktop, double-click AVAST, install it, reboot....and guess what:

IT ONLY BLOODY WORKS A TREAT, DOESN'T IT?!

Let's get that Skype thing working....

I did it, did it, I did it, did it, did it....

I did it, did it, I did it, did it, did it....

Just a suggestion but i know that one of my family prefers AVG you can get this free on line, He fixes computers and removes avast as there can be some issues with it, but this is only personal opinion.

How do i get eset smart security usernames ,passwords?

Buy them from eset.
Downloading cracked copies of security software is like leaving the door open to all the nasties you are trying to keep yourself safe from.

If you cant afford, or just want to use free security software, there are lots of options, just google free antivirus. some of the best are..
Avg9 free
Microsoft security essentials
Avira
Pc tools
Avast

If you must have a copy of eset without paying.. look on a torrent site

Trying to get a virus removed from my computer

Here's a few scanners to try out.

Windows OneCare safety scanner (Use Internet Explorer to open and run this scanner):

http://safety.live.com

ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus Online Scan (Use Internet Explorer to open and run this scanner):

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

Then I recommend you download and install the following applications:

Free trial of ESET NOD32 (Yeah, you just scanned, however that scanner doesn't run a startup scan like the software-version):

http://www.eset.com/products/nod32.php

Ad-Aware Free:

http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Spybot Search & Destroy:

http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-amp-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=mncol

AVG Anti-Rootkit Free:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AVG-Anti-Rootkit.shtml

I HIGHLY recommend that you install all these scanners before scanning anything. Make sure to restart after each installation, regardless if they ask you to restart or not. Do not run either the online or offline scanners at the same time, they will cause a conflict. So please remember, run each scanner at least once, but one at a time. That includes the downloaded scanners and the online scanners. Don't run either at the same time.

Let us know how it works for you, hope you get this problem resolved.

Ok then i guess you should try repairing the NORTON by running the installation again and choosing the reapir option or the next option is to use another anti virus.

you can visit www.avast.com/eng/programs.html and download avast! 4 home edition free edition.
please restart your pc before installing the avast.
after installing try updating and schedule a boot scan by
  1. cutting and pasting this "W62911071H4800A1106-PJY5XRR5" when prompted for the registration key.
  2. click on the menu icon at the top left of the avast window.
  3. click on "schedule a boot scan" and restart your pc

Good luck !!
