Check with HP for a Windows 7 driver for the printer. HP Ink Jets require proper drivers to work correctly. Once you have downloaded and installed the drivers try connecting again. If you have installed the drivers and Windows 7 still refuses to "talk" to the printer, you may have to adjust your advanced network settings as well. Open up the Network and Sharing center, click on advanced sharing settings and make sure file and printer sharing is turned on. Also check "File Sharing Connections" and enable file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56 bit encryption. If that fails to work you may need to speak with HP support for further assistance.

- to tell you honestly HP did not support windows 98 for their new printers... so there is no way you can find the driver for windows 98... all you can do is to upgrade your OS to XP or vista....
Have you already installed the software? If so, you need to uninstall what is currently installed, and unplug the printer, then run through the install process again using the software from the link above. Make sure not to plug in the Photosmart until the installation process tells you to!
