The gearbox is good, what the problem is,is the nylon speed change ring that goes on the outside of the gearbox that takes the power of the gearbox, the end of the teeth, about 2mm or less strip making only noise when in 2nd or 3rd gear,,they sell it with the new gearbox and charge you,,,,,but you can buy it separatly,,,the part no.419558-2,,pick key 01820914

I had the same problem with my 451, after some research and with a exploded parts list i found that makita have an improved replacement gearbox assembly, The part number is 125430-5 Gear assembly and you will also need to replace the change lever, part 125435-5 total price inc delivery was $91.80 inc delivery from Syd Wilson electrics. syd2@iinet.net.au.

You also might want to consider just buying a new drill-only replacement (currently $118.80 at Tyler Tool: tylertool.com/makita). Comes with a new three year warranty, so you can send it back to be repaired by Makita next time.

How do you take the chuck off makita bhp 451

After removing the screw lock the short end of a 3/8" to 1/2" allen wrench in the chuck. Firmly hold the drill on the edge of a bench or lock it in a vice so you can strike the allen wrench hard and fast. The screw is reverse threaded but the chuck turns lefty loosy like a regular nut and bolt. It's the best and only way to break the chuck free.

One question please, I have makita cordlless

according to the schematic I saw yes you can and I think that you will be pleased with its performance, their operator manual even lists the weight of tool with this battery. Makita has a 1 year limited warranty on the Li-Ion battery that you might want to consider if you have the receipt.

Have taken apart the makita bhp 451 hammer drill to try & repair but not sure where the 2 small pins go in the gear assembly. Any ideas or would you have a diagram of the gear assembly? Thanks!!

Hi

If you are referring to 'pins' (about 10mm x .8mm) then these are stop pins. They sit into the clutch/chuck housing. If you look at the array of sprung pegs protruding from inside the clutch/chuck housing, you will see two small holes, diametrically opposite each other and very close to the sprung pegs. Those pins fit into each of those holes.

I hope this helps. If you are talking instead about two little rollers (about 8mm x 3mm) then i too would like to know where they go!

Thanks
