Question about Ricoh Aficio 450 Copier

Light (faded) print

My Aficio 450 prints too lightly. I've followed manual instructions, used the control panel controls, etc. to no avail. Copies just come out dirty looking. Service tech says there is nothing I can do re problem-that it is endemic to the model. Is this the case? If not, what to do?

Thanks. Done all that. Recently, too. Lots of new parts in addition. Still light copies. Large capitol letters do not fill completely, lines almost invisible. Really poor legibility.

  • Esopus Nov 02, 2008

Thanks, guys! I'll give it another shot and let you know if it is THE solution. Meanwhile, I'm going to try something off the wall: a tinted, thin film (or glass plate) on top of the regular glass to reduce the amount of light reflected back to the lens. According to the manual more reflected light = lighter print. If that works I'll swap out the glass plate for a tinted one from the local glass shop. (That way the ADF would continue to work.) We'll see.
    Thanks again,
    Stan (Esopus)

Hi there Esopus, has this problem been resolved at all??? It sounds like som eof the guys who gave you a hand are a little bit rusty on their knowledge of the Ricoh copiers and also their general understanding of the workings of a copier... (no offence intended to the other posters...) Please let me know if you still need help.

If you. It is not using to toner original, the problem is to toner of low quality there produces all kind of problems has to toner generic that work very well but there are others do not serve nor to throw them so that they contaminate.
These produce problems of quality of copy, dirty bottom, clear copy, excessive dirt in the fusing, dirt in the laser, cloggings of paper and can turn crazy to any technician, like thus also to the owner of the copier.

Try this:
Go to SP Mode
Press "Clear Modes" enter 1 0 7 and press and hold "Clear/Stop for 4 seconds. Press 1
enter 2207 and execute with toner bottle inside
Exit Sp mode

Try it two or three times.

If this doesn´t work try cleaning glass below the toner hopper.

You might need to change
Drum with blade, Charge Roller, Developer, and Transfer Belt.

I concur with Bubbabear; this is a typical indication of a tired developer and replacing it is pretty messy. Developer is responsible for 'scrubbing' the areas that are to be white while leaving the content areas black.
I checked with my erstwhile supplier, Precision Roller, to see about pricing and was surprised to see how the price has changed since I was last doing service. The number of copiers still using separate toners and developers (non-cartridge machines) is probably shrinking which raises production costs.
If you intend to DIY (as stated, this is messy and should be done in conjunction with other maintenance), you can order it here:
Ricoh developer
You may find it cheaper elsewhere but I trusted the company for almost 10 years to supply this kind of supplies.

I don't hold much hope for reducing the amount of light; if anything, that will incease the unwanted gray background.
The 'large capital letters do not fill out' now sounds like the drum may be at fault; this is a fairly typical indication.

I just copied (yeah, that word) a thumbnail description of the approximate maintenance cycle for your machine from the Precision Roller page linked below:

    GENERAL INFORMATION - Introduction Date: AFICIO 340/350/450/455 - 06/98, AFICIO 350E/355E/450E/455E - 05/00 - YIELDS: Estimated Drum Life 150,000 Toner 27,000 @ 6%, Developer: Replace every 300,000

What's the copy count on the machine?  It could be resolved by adding developer to the unit.

Our copier is copying in light shade. how to make it darker

To adjust the default lighter/darker setting

1. On the LaserJet 3015, press MENU/ENTER.

2. Use the < or the > button to select Copy setup, and then press MENU/ENTER.

3. Use the < or the > button to select Def. Light/Dark, and then press MENU/ENTER.

4. Use the < or the > button to adjust the setting. Move the slider to the left to make all of the

copies lighter than the original, or move the slider to the right to make all of the copies

darker than the original.
5. Press MENU/ENTER to save the selection.

Page 48 of the User Guide has instructions for adjusting the light/dark setting during a copy job.

Also see the Troubleshooting section of the User Guide for other possible reasons for light/faded copies.

If your copies continue to come out too light, you may need to clean the insert a new toner cartridge or change brands of toner. I tried several "generic" toner cartridges and refills, but my prints and copies were always faded or streaky. After going back to genuine HP cartridges, I haven't had any print quality problems.

Its printing very poorly on color

A full feature software and driver package for Windows 7 is not available for your product. However, the Windows 7 operating system installed on your computer contains a basic driver solution for your product. With the basic driver, some of the advanced product features are not available. However, using the workaround procedures in this document, you can still print from a software program. You can also import and view images on a memory card, if your product has a memory card slot. Use the following instructions to install the basic driver in Windows 7, and then review the workaround procedures to use the available features for your product.

Dell Computer printing issue

If the documents are actually printing, the problem is most likely with the printer(s). Poor print quality is almost always a result of problems with the printers or their printing supplies (toner, ink cartridges, paper, defects or debris on rollers creating streaking, etc.).

Phaser 8560 magenta ink not transfering to paper

Hi jbasset285: Your printhead may be bad do to third party ink.
Try these steps first.
Diagnosing Print-Quality Problems
The Troubleshooting Print-Quality Page provides a good overview of the most
common print quality problems. To print the Troubleshooting Print-Quality Page,
follow these steps:
1. From the Control Panel, scroll to Troubleshooting, then press OK.
2. Scroll to Print Quality Problems, then press OK.
3. Scroll to Troubleshooting Print Quality Page, then press OK.
The Troubleshooting Print Quality Page includes instructions for printing the
Eliminate Light Stripes test print. These instructions are also provided on the next
page of this manual. The Eliminate Light Stripes test print indicates individual weak
or missing jets or an obstruction in the imaging path that affects a vertical band down
the entire page. Also, you may see color variation from jet to jet on the Eliminate
Light Stripes test print. Some variation is normal, occasionally occurs, and usually
self-corrects within a few printed pages. If a print-quality problem is not resolved
with the information provided in the Diagnosing Print-Quality
