Touchpad Scrolling

The scrolling feature on a laptop touchpad can take some getting used to, which causes some users to disable the feature.
Whether scrolling was intentionally turned off or never enabled on the laptop, it can easily be turned on from the "Mouse Properties" menu.

Click "Start" (or the Windows logo button in Vista and Windows 7) and select "Control Panel." Select "Classic View" in Vista if not already displayed. Double click "Mouse."
You may also access "Mouse Properties" in Vista and Windows 7 by clicking the Windows logo and typing "Mouse" in the search box.
Press "Enter," then click "Mouse" when the search is finished.
Select the "Hardware" tab.
Select the touchpad and click "Properties."
Click "Change Settings" if the settings aren't displayed.
Click the "Device Settings" tab in Windows 7 and select the touchpad.
Click "Settings."
Click "Virtual Scrolling" in the touchpad properties window.
Click the boxes next to each "Enable Scrolling" box and click "OK." Scrolling is now turned on for your touchpad.

Touchpad

Which Buttons? What do you mean they are not working?
Download and reinstall the touchpad drivers.

Get online and got to www.google.com In the google search box type: "Dell Support" (without the quotes and put your manufacturer name before Support). Look for downloads and drivers. Enter your model number and operating system when requested. Download and install the touchpad drivers.

My mouse pad on my lap top has stopped working and i cant figure out why. any ideas or suggestions to try?

You may have turned off the touchpad by mistake. look at your F keys for a sign that looks like a finger on a square. Often F7.

e.g. on an Acer Travelmate you would hold the Fn. key and tap the F7 key to turn on and off the Touchpad.

My daughter has a dell laptop. the mouse is not working. she wasn't able to right click now she can't use it at all. she feels she might have disabled it.

Hi, most probably you are refering to the built-in touch pad on the laptop, because a mouse is actually an external device, which can also be used on a laptop. But, I am presuming that you are refering to the touchpad, rather than a mouse, since it is a laptop.
There are 2 possibilities :-
1) there my be a hardware failure, as far as the touchpad component is concerned. And how do you find this out ?
Is your duaghter's Dell Laptop still covered under Hardware Warranty from Dell ? If yes, then call Dell Hardware Technical Support 1-800-624-9896 (24/7) , (I am presuming that you are in the US) and they would diagnose (at no charge) whether there is any hardware failure with the laptop's touchpad component. If there is, then Dell would send you a technician and get it replaced.
If your daughter's Dell laptop does NOT have a Hardware Warranty, then Dell Dell Hardware Technical Support would charge you US$ 59.00 as a diagnostics fee, to provide phone support, in order to diagnose if the touchpad is defective or not.
Incase your daughter's Dell laptop does NOT have a Hardware Warranty, then try what is mentioned in point # 2 below, before you spend US$ 59.00 as a diagnostics fee.
2) The second and most likely reason for the issue is that the settings for the touchpad have been changed. You can get the settings corrected using the Dell Touchpad Utility. If you are using vista or windows 7, just type in " Dell Touchpad Utility " in the start search option, by clicking on the windows start logo on the left side of the taskbar, open the Dell Touchpad Utility, and correct the settings, for example, right click may be disabled, etc.
You may even re-install the driver for the touchpad, by going to www.support.dell.com, click on support for home users, Drivers and Downloads, then enter either the service tag of the Dell Laptop or select the model, you will get a concise list of drivers for your specific product model : from there, download & re-install the touchpad;s driver listed in Input Device Drivers, after which reboot the laptop and the issue most probably should get resolved.
It would have been nice to know the exact model of the Dell Laptop and the Operating System that is running on it.
But, please do try the above and I hope the issue gets resolved.

Laptop Touchpad - cursor random dragging problem

On my acer all I have to do is press function F7, Function is the button with 'Fn' on it. I am not sure if that works for HP, but its worth a try. Also, is there a switch near the touchpad? Sometimes there is one that switches the touch pad on and off. You can also try other Fn(function) F1 or Fn F2 etc. and see if one of the other "f" buttons work.  I hope this helps, let me know how you made out. Good Luck!

I can't use my Acer laptop touchpad an more.

If you are using vista than
Use a usb mouse to do this.

  1. Right click 'my computer'
  2. select ' device manager'
  3. locate you touchpad and select it and right click and choose 'update driver software'.

If you are using xp than follow steps 1 and 2 and the third step is 'unistall' than click scan for new hardware. XP should see the touchpad and update the drivers for it.

I have problem in typing. When I type sentences, frequently it jumps to another space. What is the problem with my laptop (acer 3683 WXMi).thanks for your assistance.

most likely your hand is touching the touchpad and moveing the mouse and eventually clicking (this can be done by taping the touchpad) I suggest while your typeing on your laptop to turn your touchpad off, its a combination of 2 buttons FN (function) and a F1-F12 key, look around, there should be small images on your f1-12 keys. but Fn+F7 should work on your acer to disable and enable the touchpad.

If you need more asistance, let me know. Good luck.
Remember to rate the solution.
