Lawn mower dies

I start the mower and it will run for 5 minutesif that. After that it starts to sputter as if there is no gas in the mower, then it finally dies out and can't be re-started for 10-15 minutes later? What is the deal?

I had a very similiar issue, try this, when the mower starts to die, unscrew the gas cap, if it starts running again, it is creating a vacuum in your fuel tank, you can get a new gas cap, or drill a small hole in it to allow a bit of air inside.

Bad gas? Water? Air filter plugged causing it to choke and sputter? Wouldnt kill it though. Sounds like water trying to be spent in bowl? ,or I'd say like almost always, clean carb , main jet gets plugged, bowl can't fill fast enough till it dies, then while sitting bowl fills back up, then runs till sputters then die.

The valves DO NEED adjusting every 250 to 300 hours of service. That is why it dies out beleive me. It is not that hard to do if you have a service manual to help you along to perform this task

LT1550: runs for about 30 mins on 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. sputters and DIES!!!!! I have to wait a day or two before it would start again.

Try this:
When it begins to stall, loosen the gas cap. If the engine smooths out, clean the vent holes on the cap.

Mower starts out with a full gas filter for about 25 min. then starts to sputter and barely has a trace of gas in the filter.

It doesn't have to have a full filter to run, but the sputtering and fuel line volume indicates fuel starvation or a type of vapor lock (from a vacuum situation). A mower like this has to vent the fuel tank or it will only draw a while and then no more. Your gas cap's threads are the actual vent for the tractor. Try running it with the cap on somewhat loose, Post back if needed.

Lawn mower stays running on jumper cables but once disconnected it shuts down when choke is engaged

if it is already running and you "engage" the choke, you will flood the engine with too much gas and it will sputter and die. the only time you engage the choke is to start the engine when it is cold. if the mower dies when you remove jumper cables, and you leave the choke alone, you need to have someone look at your charging system.

2 year old craftsman 42" deck tractor runs fine for 15 minutes then sputters and dies. Will start, run 2-3 minutes, die again. Leave sit will run for 20 minutes.

if it restarts immediately, check the vent in the gas cap for restriction. also, the solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor may be sticking or getting weak. if you have to let it sit for awhile before it retarts, the ignition module may be breaking down when it heats up. i'd bet on the gas cap or solenoid though

Sputtering Mower

It might not be disengaging the mower deck all the way off. I had this problem on an older model.

Starts but won't stay running

I had the same problem with my Husqvarna. I thought it was the fuel system, but I was told to check my gas cap for proper venilation. When the mower starts to sputter, unscrew the gas cap to let the air flow. If it isn't venting right it will actually pull the gas out of the carb.

6yr old Craftsman Lawn Tractor - Koehler 18 HP Auto. Sputter&Dies

Try running it again and when it starts to die remove the gas cap and see if it starts to run better. It's possible that the gas tank isn't venting correctly. If that doesn't work post back and we'll try to come up with some other solutions.
