SOURCE: bypassing the 150 watt blown amp with passive crossover

3/4 update: i bypassed the 300w amp on my first ovtr3 with a cs3006 crossover i purchased on ebay. the input wires at the base of the speaker were connected to the input of the crossover, the bass output of the new crossover was connected to the yellow/yellow-black lf+/lf- wires that used to leave the old 300w amp. the high freq output of the new crossover was directly connected to the leads coming from the speaker's tweeter (running the midfreq outputs from the new crossover to the input of the speaker's old crossover is no good, since the midfreq output of the new crossover would rolloff and provide little high freq to the tweeter). The mid-freq output from the crossover was connected to the input of the old crossover that came with the speaker (alternatively, i could have wired the mid freq output from the new crossover directly to the midrange speakers, but i figured the old crossover might have had some characteristics that would have been helpful. the result is better than i hoped for! true, the bass is not quite as floor shaking as before (and you need an amp that can boost +5-+10db below 350Hz and rolloff the boost above 350Hz), but the end result is more than satisfying and gives these speakers new life. I am using a Sony receiver that puts out around 200W for the front speakers.

Which amplifier is best suitable for me to use?

This really depends on the setup you intend to create in your vehicle.

The Amplifer (amp) needs to be matched to the speakers you intend to run.

As a rule of thumb, the power of the amp shouldn't exceed the max. power of the speaker (this may damage your speaker). Instead, the amp's RMS output power should be at 75-100% of the speaker's RATED (RMS) input power. NOTE: this must NOT be confused with max power.

Ideally, you want to run each speaker with its own amp channel.

A subwoofer will usually require a hi-power single channel amp, or a 2 channel amp, bridged into 1 (to increase power output required for the sub).

Here are some examples in simpler terms:

1 channel (hi power) amp can run a subwoofer.
2 channel amp can run 2 speakers, or 1 sub (bridged).
4 channel amp can run 4 speakers, or a combination of 2 spkrs + 1 sub (bridged), or perhaps 2 subs (bridged).

Hope this makes sense.

My infinity overture 3 crossover does not work anymore (both sides of the crossover do not have any output. If I bypass it the speakers do work (obviously without the filtering) My question is how do I...

This is a 3-way speaker; specifically which speakers do you hear something from and which speakers do you hear nothing from? If the woofer amplifer is blown, for example, you will hear nothing from the woofers, but will hear sound from the midrange speakers and the tweeter.

Why does the red light click to green without the speakers on?

That system responds to signal input, ie an electrical signal present on the input, in order to turn on the internal amplifier. If it is turning green without any input from the source, it could require service. It may be responding to static electricity...

The speaker should go to sleep after ten minutes or so, turning from green to red again.

Infinity 2 overture speakers- 1 wasn't working so I replaced the fuse. Now it works but doesn't have the same sound output as the other. Any suggestions?

Verify that the bass levels are set the same on each speaker. If they are and the problem occurs on all program material, you most likely have a bad driver or amplifier in the speaker. One other thing to verify is that the balance or output levels of the left and right main speaker outputs are set equally on the receiver.

Good Luck,
BB

Bypassing the 150 watt blown amp with passive crossover

I'm purchasing 2 infinity 3-way passive crossovers on eBay with the same crossover freqs as my two overture 3's with blown amps. For 19.99 each, it's worth a try. Good luck to you!
