The top of the battery nearest the light bulb is the positive connection and is in direct contact with the bulb. The negative connection is a strip of brass that runs along the length of the torch from the bottom (bottom of last battery) to the bulbs side connection.

Unlike conventional incandescent flashlights, where the bulb unscrews or pops out of the reflector assembly for replacement, the Pelican Sabrelite bulb is permanently mounted in the larger assembly. The entire "lamp module" is replaced as a single unit.
