1989 mazda mvp wont start just clicks has a brand new battery

also have a 04 MPV with the same problem. Happened last year also. it's one of the ignition coils. Must be a design flaw from the factory as somehow moisture get into the coil and causes missfiring. Coil costs about $77 from Mazda (CAN).

i believe your over charging ie; voltage regulator bad. should only have between 12-14.5 volts max when testing at bat with volt meter

VSS or vehicle speed sensor aka cam sensor or crank position sensor. Test the battery and alternator. You should also check for blown fuses, bad wires and grounds on a car as old as yours. If you find it's getting spark and fuel after further testing, check the timing belt. It could have slipped or broke even if it was changed recently so either pull off the cover or at least do a compression test.

I'm guessing that you've tested the actual current output of the alternator then. I'm assuming that the output is between 13-14Volts at the battery when the car is running... If it's too low, then it's not charging your battery at all, too high, and it's frying your battery.... Another thing that can cause this is if you have a short in your electrical system.. that, however, will be difficult to narrow down...

2003 mazda 6 /3.0L[ford engine]5 spd automatic.I replaced both engine & trans. due to motor being blown,with low milage salvage motor [under 50,000 miles] /IF YOU CRANK ENGINE IT WILL TEMPORARY START ONLY IF YOU HOLD HAND OVER THROTTLE BODY INCLUDING REMOVING HAND.NOTE :IT HAS FUEL PREASURE DO NOT KNOW PSI./IT HAS STRONG VACCUM AT THROTTLE BODY[AS IN UNCOFORTABLE DRAW ON YOUR HAND]----DOSE ANYBODY HAVE ANY GOOD TECHNICAL ADVISE???
